There is a new Vietnamese banh mi place in town. As I'm forever in the search of a decent banh mi, I was interested in coming here for a visit. The menu is in English only. There did not seem to be any Chinese. They served various banh mi and rice along with sides and drinks. We decided to order a few things and share.

Caramel Viet Coffee Shake ($35). This was clearly way too sweet and not enough coffee. I was a bit disappointed by this as I thought it would have a stronger coffee taste as Vietnamese coffee is pretty strong. But as milkshakes go, this had the right texture and consistency. Just no coffee taste and just a lot of sweet SWEET caramel.

Crispy Pork Belly Banh Mi ($45). They seemed to have more upgraded banh mi versions. None of the usual classics that I've grown to love and sorely miss. Pricewise, it wasn't expensive. And I've been to a LOT of expensive (and seriously overpriced) banh mi in Hong Kong. I'm constantly on the search for something the reminds me of home. Well...this really didn't remind me of that. We went with something that something that was the closest to a classi

Size wasn't very big but at least I could bite into it in one bite.  The bread was good though. That I liked. It was crispy on the outside with a nice fluffiness that is exactly what a Vietnamese baguette should be. However, the crispy pork belly wasn't very crispy though it tasted ok. While biting into it, I realized one thing that was missing. The acidic pickles that are usually found along with the kick of spice from the sauce. There were pickles, but they weren't sour enough. Actually, they weren't sour at all. There was  smear of liver pate that was nice. I had to douse it with siracha mayo (which is available at the counter) and that made all the difference. I guess my search for a good banh mi continues.

Shredded Chicken and Roast Duck Com Ga ($55). The rice was better. It was cooked in chicken broth which made it feel like I was eating the rice from Hainanese chicken. The roast duck and chicken was moist and tender. It was packed with flavor. And yes, it did remind me of eating roast duck from a local BBQ roast meat place. Probably why I liked it.

Lemongrass Steak Satay Com Ga ($55). We also ordered another round of rice as portion size was pretty small. Lemongrass steak satay is something that wasn't not traditional so we gave it a go. The steak was tender and not overcooked. There was a slight hint of lemongrass but I think it could have been stronger.

Garlic Butter Wings($40). These were actually a bit too oily and didn't taste buttery enough. However, there was a strong garlic taste. The skin was super crispy and the chicken wasn't over cooked.

Fried Spring Rolls ($40). These were pretty good and didn't taste too oily. They were filled with chicken, duck and pork that gave a nice mix of flavors.

Mon Cuon ($40). I wanted something that wasn't all fried. These I liked though the rice wrap was bit chewy.

However, the filling made up for it. The shrimp tasted fresh and the cucumbers had a nice crunch.

When I first saw the name of the restaurant, I was a bit taken aback by the connotation. The menu also plays on this same theme of how Asians speak English. Growing up in Canada, where other children would pretend to speak like this in front of me as I was Chinese, seeing something like this as their restaurant theme slightly stung. I know they are treating this as a joke, but I guess they never grew up where surrounded by racism. Elementary school children can be very cruel at times. But as no one else seems to have clued in on this, I just let it slide. Like how I treated those children in the past. I just let it slide.

The food is ok, not great. There are hits and misses. But prices aren't expensive and I can see many people coming here for a quick bite at lunch hour. Service was not very fast but friendly.
