Prawn Pad Thai $148
I spent weeks dreaming about this pad thai since I saw it last time but I feel like the portion got smaller… which is why I also got their ice cream afterwards.
But back to this noodle dish. The wok hei is great as each strand of noodle has a light sheen of oil with a strong aroma of smokiness, as if it has been kissed with an open flame. The noodles themselves are my favourite type of noodles ever. The thin and chewy rice noodles are so good against the sweet, savoury and tangy sauce. The sauce is perfectly balanced, not too sweet, salty or sour. They use a pretty traditional recipe with tamarind, fish sauce and palm sugar but the chef also said they add a bit of ketchup which definitely surprised me.
As for the toppings, there are 3 big and plump pieces of tiger prawn but they are pretty average and could have been seasoned more. I honestly rather they remove the prawn or use lower-quality prawns and lower the price too. I did however enjoy the fried tofu which is chewy, firm and bouncy. They also absorbed the sauce and wok hei very well.
The bean sprouts are crunchy and refreshing but lack sweetness and flavour. Not bad to contrast against the chewy and tangy noodles. There are also some crushed peanuts which again add a great savoury taste and crunchy texture to bites. The Thai green mango on the side didn’t have much taste and merely gave a break from all the strong flavours.
A topping in this dish I thoroughly enjoyed was the egg strands. As an egg lover, each piece of the egg was incredibly well seasoned, surprisingly fluffy and amazing with the chewy noodles. I wish there were more.
I highly advise you to squeeze lime sauce over it to add another layer of flavour to this dish and accentuate the wok hei even more.

Young coconut ice cream $78
Yes, I got this the last time I came and I got it again today because the pad thai was not as filling as I expected it to be.
This ice cream is one of my favourites in all of HK. Not sweet at all but super creamy, smooth and silky. It is amazing to think they only used coconut cream and thus make this dairy-free. The steamed sweet corn segments surprisingly work well with thus ultra-creamy dessert as it offers a fresh sweetness and a juicy crunch. The peanuts too offer saltiness and a different kind of shattering crunch.
The portion is great for sharing but I happily finished the two ginormous scoops by myself as it is not very heavy and rather light. I think everyone should get this when they finish their meal at Samsen.

💬 Overall, another amazing meal at Samsen but I wish the portion for their mains were bigger as the price they charge is relatively higher than other Thai restaurants. But I do understand the reason why (everything is quite authentic despite their intention to appeal to a more westernised HK demographic) and simply hope the portions match up.
