同朋友即興dinner想食日本串燒就喺幾間港島區有名既yakitori店入面揀左黎Birdie。今次由入座到離座都好開心,好滿意。佢menu佔大部分都係雞,每一樣都好出色..我地不段加單都無一樣失望過。雞翼燒到好脆;Quail butterfly你估佢會係細細地無乜肉,但佢就好juicy同埋好好咬口。仲有不得不提Birdie係用炭爐燒,令到啲串燒更加好味。串燒唔夠食既話加埋個親子飯就一流..細細碗,但加埋碗雞湯好好味。如果你諗住食完一定好大陣味成身臭既話,絕對唔需要擔心。我本身都諗住會係咁..但係Birdie既抽風做得好好,走左之後一啲燒烤味都無。依度雖然係貴,但完全唔肉赤俾咁多錢去享受依度既一切。坐得舒服,服務好,食物一流。

Horrible service. They told us last order was 30 min and an hour before we had to give up the table. They served us burnt food as well 5 min we were supposed to give up the table and gave us the check immediately. Would not recommend coming if you would like to enjoy your meal in any way possible.

暫時是我吃過最好吃的唐掦雞翼(雖然我只吃過幾間😂),
一咬,肉汁滲出來,肉質不乾,
至於外面的粉,也有著一種甜甜鹹鹹的味道,
Which is 我覺得係好味!😍

有些串燒沒有太大特別所以沒有拍照,
最後點了這個擔擔麵,
心想,

This yakitori restaurant is located on 6th floor of H Code, the hip building near the top of Pottinger Street. There is an open kitchen right in the middle, with 18 counter seats surrounding the kitchen plus a number of normal tables on the side. The restaurant is very popular and with serving arrangements, the first slot from 6 to 8 pm, while the second from 9 to 11 pm.Tonight we came a bit earlier than our booking time, arriving at 6:45 pm while there were a number of customers dining already.

Tonight we came a bit earlier than our booking time, arriving at 6:45 pm while there were a number of customers dining already. We sat at one side of the counter and in fact I like the spot as we could see the team in action clearly. There is a grill 'island' and seeing the staff filling the charcoal, busy grilling the different yakitori is entertainment already. The restaurant soon was fully seated. With the current coronavirus outbreak it is amazing they are still attracting so many patrons.

We started with a new dish, a collaboration between Birdie with Tominokoji Yamagishi. The Tender Chicken Breast with Uni and Yamagishi Special Vinegar Jure ($150) is beautifully plated, with the uni on top of the chicken breast, with some finely chopped seaweed sprinkled. The uni is sweet and matched very well with the vinegar sauce, thickened to semi-jelly texture. And mixing with a bit of wasabi the dish is a really good appetizer.

We have ordered many different yakitori, with the first round having Wing ($38), Gizzard ($45) and Liver ($45). The chicken wing is grilled perfectly, with a crispy skin seasoned well with salt, while the meat is tender and juicy. The gizzard is very crunchy and the liver has been coated with a home-made sauce, with a soft bite. All are very good.

The next batch coming had Pork Belly and Asparagus Roll ($45), Ginkyo ($35), Pancetta and Mozzarella Roll ($40) and Chicken Harami ($42). The pork belly is not too fat and got a rich aroma, while the asparagus offers a nice contrasting bite. The ginkgo is decent, and the pancetta and mozzarella roll is a surprisingly good choice. The cheese was very soft and melting in the bacon, with the smoky note highly appealing. The chicken harami got a very interesting crunchy texture, and is my first time eating that, and definitely worth trying it out.

The final round I had Grilled Rice Ball ($40), Heart ($45), Thigh ($45) and Tsukune ($45). We saw how the rice ball takes meticulously effort to grill properly, with the chef putting a shiso and then adding a sauce during different stages of the grilling. The result was fantastic and the rice got a nice crunchy surface but not burnt or dried out.

It was my first experience on the grilled chicken heart. They were very good and the chef had prepared a yuzu sauce with spring onion, and it was one of my favorites in the evening. The thigh was meaty and good, while the other of my favorites is the tsukune. The minced chicken got some small soft bones so offering a great bite. The sauce was very tasty, not overly sweet or salty, and seeing the chef personally handling all the grilling of this for all tables probably also show the importance of this yakitori to himself. A truly great tsukune, one of the best I have ever tasted.

With two bottles of water, the bill was $1,211 which is reasonable considering the quality and and whole ambiance it is worth the price. They also got some seasonal sake but because I was driving so could not sample them. A good place I recommend in town if you like yakitori.

中環新興熱店「Birdie」位置雖然有點交通不便,但勝在抽氣不錯,又夠氣氛,服務生態度亦比預期良好。最重要一環嘅主題串燒即叫即煮,熱力十足,價格大多都好合理,多款雞肉及雞內臟串燒嘅質素及調味就有啲參差
;值得推介嘅有雞腎雞尾雞翼,但亦有部份如雞皮、雞頸、雞腿等需要調整。因考慮到進步空間仍有許多,XO仔最終決定首次光臨先俾OK評,希望下次再幫襯時有驚喜後,可以補多篇

We have been trying to get a booking at Birdie for weeks now, and this time, we succeeded by calling on Monday for a Thursday 8pm spot; i couldn't tell you another yakitori spot in HK that gets this kind of attention. I get it though; on the top floor of the uber-hip H Code Japanese restaurant/bar complex, its part of the 298 Nikuya family, and is izakaya-food polished to a mirror shine. Cool interior, tight, focused menu, full drinks list, it's built to impress. They're not related, but it actually reminds me a lot of Nojo on the ground floor of H Code; from the lighting to the menu. Service was knowledgeable and attentive, and i liked how they staggered the food a bit rather than rushing everything out like a lot of izakayas do.

If you like pure tofu, you'll enjoy this dish, which is nothing more than fried (lightly and beautifully it must be said) tofu. The garnish adds some crispiness and complexity, but not much flavor. No surprises here.

I have probably mentioned how I always order potato salad at izakayas - it's like my shrimp dumpling (har kow) test for Japanese casual eateries. Birdie has an excellent potato salad - diced cucumbers and unmashed potato chunks give it some varied texture, and the onsen egg on top was icing. Seasoning is perfect, and the mayo was not heavy-handed, leaving it chunky but not dry.

All average to above-average yakitori, though I wish they gave the option of salt/sauce (shio/tare). We prefer salt in almost every case, and they add to that preference by overdoing it on the sauce in virtually every case. The chicken skin was the one exception, as it was dripping in sauce yet was still crispy and not overwhelmed. The liver was too saucy for me, while the gizzard was perfectly cooked (just salted thank god) and bouncy. I forgot to take a picture of the chicken thigh, but it's a must-order; salted and incredibly juicy, it's what grilled chicken is supposed to taste like.

The pork with leeks were drenched in sauce and a bit chewy, so I'd probably avoid that. However, to my everlasting surprise, the pancetta and cheese really works. It's a firm, dry mozzarella, so even after grillingit retains some bite, providing a foundation for the bacon to work its salty magic. The cheese doesn't ooze away, and while it's not tough, you'll chew through it several times wondering how it's still in one piece. It's a less explosive, less tart version of bacon-wrapped tomatoes.

Both of these soaked in sauce, though they come out okay. The tsukune mixture itself seems to have egg added to it, making it fluffier and less-dense texture than usual chicken meatballs. No raw egg on the side for that reason.

Expensive at 40$ but they put a lot of time into grilling it, giving it a wonderful, even crunch all-around. Wrapped with 2 shiso leaves, I'm not sure it's worth the price but it's definitely good.

Overall, Birdie isn't bad. Not sure why they feel like bathing yakitori in sauce is a thing,  but apart from that, the food is above average. Nothing made me go "wow," but they execute their dishes confidently and with some style. The menu is well thought out, with an interesting variety of both grilled items and appetizers. In terms of pricing, you'll need to order more than you think; we ate a fried chicken sandwich at The Chicken Bar downstairs just before dinner, and we were still barely satisfied after we finished. Our meal came out to 850 for the 2 of us with 1 drink each - I'd imagine for a full meal and 2-3 drinks each, we're talking about 600-700 pp, though you can probably get away with 500 if you're not drinking much. I'm not sure a meal at Birdie is worth that much, and with how hard it is to get a reservation, I rate it as a solid yakitori joint in a city full of solid yakitori joints. Give it a shot if you're a fan of kushiyaki, but maybe when the lines die down... it's not worth the fight.
