There's a cha chan teng in North Point that is known around Hong Kong as THE best Swiss sauce chicken leg/wings in all of Hong Kong. That's quite a claim. So, boyfriend and I headed out to the hot summer sun to find out.Located on the left of the North Point MTR exit B4, is a small and very old cha chan teng. Located on the left of the North Point MTR exit B4, is a small and very old cha chan teng. It was so old looking, the wallpaper was bulging out and looked like it was going to fall at any moment. Though we were there around 3 PM on a weekday, it was full and we had to cram ourselves into a small table with another person.
Menu is in Chinese only. There is no English. They do offer afternoon tea sets, lunch and dinner sets but none of these include the Swiss sauce chicken leg or wings. However, they do offer a Swiss sauce chicken leg or wings with a huge create your own set variety. This can be mixed with anything in section A to H with an additional dessert option at Q. The more you add, the more it costs but mostly it averages around $40. As it was just too much to decide, I let boyfriend choose everything as long as I got my chicken leg. So boyfriend chose three items plus a drink for $42 which entailed the chicken leg, a sandwich item and a noodle item.
I had the ice lemon tea but boyfriend had the sweet potato red bean drink for an addtional $4. It really just taste like powdered sweet potato mixed with milk and red bean. I really didn't like it. Boyfriend said he should have stuck to the ice lemon tea.
Boyfriend chose a satay beef with instant noodles. The satay sauce was pretty good and rich in flavor. The beef, however, was so soft, it tasted like sponge.
Boyfriend ordered for me a spaghetti bolognese. It was a mini portion but it was a pretty decent portion. I was half full when I finished this. The spaghetti was not soft and soggy but definitely not al dente so not horrible. The meat sauce was good. Very rich in flavor with a strong tomato base.
Our chicken leg arrived and it was pretty big. We opted for the leg instead of wings as we noticed everyone ordered the leg. The meat was a disappointment as it was dry and not moist. However, the sauce was amazing. Dark in color yet not too salty. It was a good blend of sweet and savory. There was so much extra sauce on the plate as well. Wish I had something to lap it up.
The typical French toast was next. It was spread with peanut butter but it was a grainy type and wasn't smooth at all. The toast was too thick so it left a gummy texture. Love the generous serving of syrup.
This is the fried fish fillet sandwich. The bread was not worth mentioning but the fillet was pretty good. Not oily at all. The fish was moist and didn't fall apart. Though the tartar sauce was spread a bit unevenly. Only one side was generously heaped with spread while the other side laid a bit bare.
Super cheap prices. The food was ok. Not great but the cheap prices made up for it. Was this the best Swiss sauce shicken in town? The sauce was amazing yes. The best? I guess so as not many do a really good sauce. If only the chicken leg was more juicy and not dry, it would have been top notch. Maybe we should have tried the wings instead? Would probably be back if in the area and craving for Swiss sauce.
