Shum Shui Po is probably one of the best places to visit if you want to endure the atmosphere of local Hong Kong culture. This small classic restaurant was filled with patrons all sharing tables "the HK style", and everyone seemed to be happily absorbed in their own bowl of noodle. Everything smelled wonderful and the waitress just came sweeping us up and setting us down on a long table with two other families.

First things first, I don't know how to read Chinese. So, the moment when I sat down and the waitress starts bombarding me with random recommendations, I was so overwhelmed I just stared at her with my mouth open. My friend kept telling the waitress that we needed some time to digest the menu first, but being the super-outgoing-explosive-type waitress she were, she kept on going. Eventually she stopped and gave us time to look at the menu but not without leaving us with her "you-are-such-noobs" glare. The whole episode was quite funny and I was deduced to believe that all patrons that visited the restaurants must be old-time customers.

The menu was complicated because it wasn't the typical choose-your-soup-base and select-whatever-you-like type of menus. Most of the noodles were set with what was going to be in it, and my friend wasn't in the mood to read me the whole menu, I had no choice but to randomly poke my finger at any which one and hope for the best.

My order was the chicken with pickled veggie noodle (thank God!) and the soup base was nice. However, I didn't like the artifical sourness of the soup base because it felt like the cook doused the whole bowl with pickled juice.

My friend orderd the minced pork, fishballs, and wonton Yunnan noodles and the first taste was delicious! Rich with flavour and spices that makes you just want to drink all the soup. Of course, I did mention that was after the first taste--after a few more tastes, it starts to get oversalted and becomes slightly pungent.

Overall, this restaurant was worth the try but I probably wouldn't go back for a second visit since there's so many more yummy spicy noodles out there.
