香港杉玉 (English name: Sugidama) is the family friendly cost effective izakaya brought to you by Sushiro. The popular conveyor belt sushi restaurant that has so many people in Hong Kong lining up at every restaurant. Sugidama does serve sushi but their focus is more izakaya style dishes along with an extensive sake collection.  And unlike most izakayas, this one is family friendly. Menu is in Chinese but ordering is done by scanning a QR code which is in English and Chinese. You also pay on your way out. Like Sushiro, they also have seasonal limited menu items. Tea is offered only upon request.


I ordered a drink from the limited seasonal menu: Sugitama White Peach Juice ($48). Really good deal as it was all peach juice and very delicious.

Boyfriend had the Uji Matcha Sparkling Sake ($48). A light shot of sake that was refreshing with a bit of lemon. Like an adult lemon green tea.

Imitation Caviar Sushi ($38) was one of the recommended items. In a cute little tin that said imitation caviar on it. There was a layer of black roe.

Inside was some sushi rice layered with mince tuna. A bit salty but super cute.

The other recommended item was the Ginger Potato Salad ($48). It was served in plastic ball.

The potato salad was wrapped ina green nori. Inside was a semi hard boiled egg. The potato salad was ok with a strong taste of ginger. I can understand why a lot of people  didn't like this as it did have a fairly strong ginger taste. Otherwise, the potato salad was creamy enough.

Basil and Oil Poached Clams and Calamari ($48) was fairly good. The seafood was fresh and no sand was detected in the clams. The basil oil was fragrant. Slices of bread was provided to dip into.

The Tempura ($38) wasn't very good. There was a prawn, sweet potato, carrot and pumpin. Salt and matcha salt was provided but we ordered a tempura dipping sauce as well for no extra charge. The coating was too thick and a bit too soft. I think the tempura you get at Sushiro is much better.

The Chawanmushi ($28) was served in a pretty pot.

Inside it was topped with salmon roe. There was also shrimp, scallop and ginko. I liked this a lot. Egg was steamed perfecly and very savory in taste.

Sushi Trio with Sea Salt and Lemon ($33) was very disappointing. The sushi at Sushiro is much better. They said they use a seasoned sushi rice but it really wasn't that impressive.

Hamachi with Grapefruit ($48) was what we ended with. I liked this. The grapefruit was a refreshing addition to the hamachi.

Some of the items were good but some weren't not too impressive. It definitely isn't expensive and it is very family friendly. Might be back to see about their lunch sets.
