I don't think I've ever wandered this far down Stanley St, so I had somehow gone my entire time here completely unaware of its existence. I'm not the worlds biggest noticer of things, so it's hard for me to describe the charm of this place. From the Big White Guy blog, I got the following description: "quaint wooden booths... ornate wood panelling, stained-glass murals, marble tabletops, rosewood furniture, brass spittoons, and framed scrolls on white walls." Yes. That's it. And beautiful diningware and a traditional menu.

It's also a little old and run down. There are cracks in the floor. We saw a bug. Personally, I think that just adds to the charm, but it did factor into the considerations of whether to take fancy visitors here.

This was called something like "sauteed mixed vegetables." Lots of mushrooms and bean sprouts, some carrots, some greens, some other things. I think it was cooked in chicken broth and corn starch. Yeah, definitely can't take vegetarians here. We couldn't find tofu on the menu. Anyway, this was a solid veggie dish. B

Everyone in the reviews raved about the sweet and sour pork. It was indeed good s&s. It was nice and crispy, with an appropriate amount of sauce and the bell peppers were seared nicely. I don't think they used very good quality pork, however, because I found some of the pieces intolerably chewy. Great, B+

Singapore noodles! This was my choice. I really love the mixture of curry powder and rice vermicelli. Everything that goes in just contributes to its awesomeness from the sausage to the shrimp to the fried egg and onions. It's a heaping pile of comfort. This version I thought was pretty good, but it wasn't as strongly curry-flavored as I would have liked. Good, B-

There's a good case to be made that this place is bad. It's dirty. Lots of people (not me) seem to have had service issues. The food is good, but not worth the prices they charge for it. Yet I will straight up say that I plan on coming back. I eat at lots of dirty places, like some really questionable cooked food centers, and I blow lots of money on things that aren't worth it, like the overpriced burger trend in town. Luk Yu delivers. It delivers exactly what I want from a place like this*. Old world feel, classics on the menu.

*Well... not enough curry powder. But I'll live.
題外話/補充資料: For dinner we just walked in with no reservations (on a Monday) and had no trouble getting a seat on the first floor, which I hear is reserved for their best customers.
