Having had years of exposure Eastern Mediterranean / Levantine Arab cuisine in the Middle East and the US throughout the past 13 years, I consider myself very picky when it comes to this topic. As such, I have always been disappointed by the quality of the food at the few restaurants available in HK. That was until I discovered Maison du Mezze (part of the same restaurant group as Shahrazad in Central but with significantly better food according to my seasoned palate). For the mezze / حواضر / ap
For the mezze / حواضر / appetizers, the bread was freshly baked out of the oven - nowhere else in HK serves this. The classic hummus and falafel are the closest thing to what I used to eat back in the UAE and Jordan. The sambusek was not bad either. As for the main dishes, I felt as if they was transported me back to the Arab region as well.
The kanafeh / kunafa has a unique twist in that they added pomegranate sauce. Although this is not technically authentic, I feel like it was an serendipitous twist as it balanced out the "heaviness" of all that cheese.
The decor is also reminiscent of classy Arab restaurants I visited in the UAE. The Egyptian music in the background also contributed to the nostalgia.
100% would go back to try the other dishes, inshallah!
