A friend and I decided to have a catch up dinner so we decided to go here. Ootoya is one of the mainstream Japanese places that I always feel is consistent. No matter what you order, it's consistent. And perhaps since it's so consistent, there was quite a queue to wait for a table.Once seated, it was pretty noisy. I had come here when it first opened and I liked the quiet solitude. Menu is in Chinese and English. They offer everything under the sun and have sets that are very good for solo eaters. My friend and I decided to share dishes so we opted out of the sets.
We ordered an assorted sashimi set. This included salmon, snapper and shrimp. Sashimi was fresh. This is salmon sushi three ways: seared, raw and with some sort of mayo type sauce on top. I liked the one with the sauce on top as it was tangy as mayo usually is. Tofu salad was pretty good. There were some small white fishes that were crispy so gave it some texture. The salad dressing was sesame and had a strong nutty taste. Grilled pork and grilled beef came with a bit of potato salad and regular salad. The meat was moist and tender, slightly seasoned with some salt. The potato salad seemed to have been improved since last I came as it's now creamier that before. An assortment of yakitori included shitake mushrooms, okra, chicken, pork and minced chicken meat. I found the sauce that basted the yakitori a bit too sweet. But it was grilled fine. Always a consistent with no serious surprises but I guess it fits the purpose of a family type restaurant. Service was good especially since I left something behind at the restaurant and they kept it for me and didn't toss it away.
