There are some restaurants that surprise me. And Hara is one of them. Located in Jordan, an area not known for more upscale dining, is where I found this place. We walked by it a few months ago as they were still renovating. The owner (we assume) was friendly, explaining their concept to us. The place looked nice and I made a note to pay it a visit once it was up and running after a while. But for some reason I forgot about it. Until one afternoon, boyfriend and I were again in this area and w
The place is beautiful. Seating is spacious and there is bar area in the back. It wasn't too full but they did have diners on a weekday evening.
Menu is in English and Chinese. It's concise, not overly cluttered. A good sign that they are focused. They serve modern Japanese Western dishes.
I odered a drink called Rose Ladies ($50). A mocktail made of rose syrup, pineapple and cranberry juice. It was good. Just the right amount of sweetness with that sharp tartness from the cranberry juice. There was a light fragrant rose flavor that wasn't too over powering.
We were provided with a complimentary Amuse Bouche. A spicy scallop skirt with imitation shark fin. Not too spicy but just enough for to wake you up. A nice little crunchy dish while you wait for the main event.
We ordered two starters. The first was the Hoikkaido Squid with Anchovy and Spring Onion ($88). This was delicious. The squid was just cooked so it was still soft. It was salty from the addition of anchovy. And the touch of spring onions gave it a fragrant touch.
The other starter was the Tua Tua Shellfish Pot ($138). But as they didn't have Tua Tua or mussels that day, Diamond Clams were used instead. You get a choice of sauce so we chose sake because it's a simple and just the way I like my food served. Just enough to enhance the flavor of the key ingredient. And that is exactly what it did. The clams were astounding. Fresh and packed with so much flavor. The sake sauce took up the juices from the clams.
We shared two mains. The first was the Grilled Whole Kinki Fish ($168). The fish was cooked perfectly. The skin crisp and well seasoned. The meat so soft, it flake easily of. Plating was perfect. Nothing extra was added to detract from the star of the dish.
The other main was a Dry Aged U.S. Duroc Pork Bone-In Rib Eye ($228). The pork was so moist and tender, it literally melted in my mouth. Perfectly seasoned. It came with a tiny bowl of grated daikon and apple vinegar for dipping. A very Japanese take on the usual apple sauce that is more traditionally served with pork.
We finished our meal by sharing dessert. A Pan Fried Cheesecake with Sea Salt Caramel Sauce ($68). The plating ws not overdone. A rectangle of cheesecake with caramel sauce and diced dragon fruit, peaches and pomegranate seeds.
I had to take an aerial photo as the caramel sauce was shaped like a fish.
The cheesecake was wrapped in a filo pastry that was crispy. The cheesecake was soft like a baked cheesecake. The salted caramel sauce could have been a bit more saltier but it was still delicious. The fruit was fresh and I did like the addition of pomengranate seeds for crunch.
The food was not only delicious but beautifully plated. Minimalistic styling with no strange extras that made no sense that is often sadly found in many restaurants that try too hard. Service was wonderful with a constant changing of plates. Portions are not big but you still didn't leave starving. Price was reasonable for what was served. Would definitely be back and recommend it to anyone who asks me for a restaurant recommendation. Possibly one of my favorites this year.
