Sevva is a beautiful dining spot with a great ambience to offer its patrons. My experiences prior to this one have been a cocktail here and there with a bar snack, a slice of beautiful cake and even a whole cake for my birthday one year which was marvelous. With my mum visiting town, I thought it would be a perfect place to take her for afternoon tea.
It is not your traditional afternoon tea served with scones. I was willing to forgive that, expecting a trade up to a wonderful selection of more Madame B's cakes .
The savoury aspects of the tea set were of good quality and generous. You get plenty of smoked salmon, a delightful crab bamboo charcoal mini burger, a wagyu mini burger , a big dollop of frois gois marmalade on a mini waffle, mushroom ragout and signature vegetarian spring roll. These were all enjoyable and innovative fusion tastes which displayed a good sample of what the bar snack menu had to offer.
I felt very let down by the dessert tier as I think Sevva is especially well known for its selection of cakes. I was basically hoping for a small sample of as many cakes as they could stuff onto that bottom tier, but what i received instead were some very lazy and cheap substitutes . There was a strawberry dipped in Chocolate decorated in hundreds and thousands. In fairness, it was a large strawberry , but this does not excuse that complete lack of imagination . There were two pieces of cake : one being the caramel crunch cake which was lovely and the second one was a rainbow sponge topped with colorful popcorn. I probably found this more visually appealing for a 7 year old child , and the cake had an awful medicinal cherry syrup flavoring . I guess there must be some people out there who like that?
The next dessert was a lazy glass of chestnut paste topped with fresh cream. I understand that fresh cream is rare to come across in Hong Kong , however if you are going to serve half a cup of fresh cream and paste , at least serve it with some scones! I have a feeling the long biscuit sticks that came with were supposed to be for dipping into this poor excuse for a dessert.
The last one was supposed to be a trifle (the fried rice of desserts) . I think it was literally made from the leftovers in the kitchen (moreso than an actual trifle!) There was half a glass of vanilla custard , one piece of mirange and it was all topped with colorful jelly. Once again Sevva, you're not fooling anyone with your cost cutting attempts disguised as visually colorful distractions .
If you do decide to come here for afternoon tea, DO NOT order coffee. It's basically generic automated machine coffee and you don't get top ups. Definitely get tea , as you get bottomless refills!
I feel as though Sevva uses afternoon tea as a means of making a huge profit on items with very little cost . Most of the items basically already exist in someway on their regular menus, but in a form that felt like an after thought. I would have felt more satisfied if I had just ordered one slice of their cakes and paid far less than what I paid for afternoon tea.
