After finding out that the shop I had originally planned to dine at was closed for Labour Day, I eventually stumbled upon this jam-packed shop located right next to the MTR. I browsed its menu posted outside and was at first drawn in by the curry fish set but after I peeked at what most of the diners were eating, it was inevitable that it had to be Hainanese chicken. I haven't yet recovered from my recent trip at Wanchai with their poorly made chicken but I ended up trusting the 20 so dine-in an
Dine-ins are $6 more expensive than take outs because of the cleaning up afterwards. But despite that, so many chose to sit down and enjoy their meals right then and there.
I know I said I was going for the Hainanese chicken but I got really curious with their Ginger chicken rice set ($35)because I've never had that before. By the way, you can choose which kind of rice to pair up with your meat - be it plain rice, vegetable rice (+$2) or oil rice (+$4). If it helps you deciding in the future, so many chose the vegetable rice.
While waiting for the food, I glanced at the interior of the shop. It was very clean and simple, with photos of their food plastered on their white shiny walls. The tables were designed fantastically too - kind of a retro look to it.
My set came out pretty quick. The chicken was more on the dryer side. To be honest, most of the chicken meat I got were pretty tough and that the only ones soft enough were at the bottom. The scallions were enough and was a nice touch to the set. And the rice wasn't steamy fresh but visually plenty. Sadly, it tasted like old rice but not too old. If I knew this was their standard quantity of rice, I would have asked for half. When I looked at the order opposite to mine, I cursed myself and asked why I didn't go with the plain old standard Hainanese chicken set because it looked so much better than mine. And it came with carrot and pork bone soup too!

After a few bites, I came to slowly like my order. Plenty of the chicken were tough yes but mixing them in with the scallions coupled with the sauce amplified the rich and healthy flavors of the chicken. As I dug deeper, I found a bunch of beansprouts underneath the chicken and boy were they delicious!
One thing to note - as the customer across me was leaving her seat, she left behind three-fourths of her rice. The cashier lady standing beside us asked her about the rice (if there was anything unusual about them) and the customer said that she only wanted the chicken and not the rice. The cashier lady then warned the customer that if she knows that she can't/won't finish the rice, then there was and has always been an option to ask for half/little rice. The customer just nodded in agreement and left. I like the cashiers' mindset and attitude because I passionately loathe food wasters.
I'll definitely come back and try their other meals.
Cash and Octopus are accepted.
