Hadn't had Japanese since moving to Sheung Wan 2 months ago, so I figured it was about time. Here's a brief breakdown:Service: One of the few places I've been in Hong Kong where I didn't once have to call over the waitstaff... they refilled glasses, took orders, brought the check... and never me waiving my hands ridiculously only to be ignored. I forgot how good that is.Atmosphere: Christmas. I don't know how it works in Japan... in the US we wait until after Thanksgiving. I guess turkey sashimi
Service: One of the few places I've been in Hong Kong where I didn't once have to call over the waitstaff... they refilled glasses, took orders, brought the check... and never me waiving my hands ridiculously only to be ignored. I forgot how good that is.
Atmosphere: Christmas. I don't know how it works in Japan... in the US we wait until after Thanksgiving. I guess turkey sashimi is not a thing? Anyway, Xmas lights all over the place, I'm surprised the staff wasn't wearing reindeer suits.
Food:
We had three pieces of sushi: tuna, swordfish, and "sea beam" which was probably see bream. I like the fish, what can I say? Anyway, they were all fine, but totally unremarkable. I regularly got better sushi when I lived in Tsuen Wan, and at half the price... almost nothing in Tsuen Wan that's not noodle soup or fried chicken is better than in Sheung Wan. So there you go. B-
Fried dumplings: There are these deep-fried dumplings that are called Yakimandoo by the Koreans (and the name is borrowed from the Japanese, from what I understand). I was hoping these were those, but alas! These were just some limp pan fried dumplings. I've had better from Park'n'Shop's freezer. Not that they were bad though... And I did like the dipping sauce. B-
Crazy fried beef thingies w/ asparagus: That's not what they were called on the menu, though it's not a half-bad suggestion for a name. These were beef wrapped around mayo and asparagus, breaded, and deep fried. Quite decadent. B
California roll: I feel like one of those American expats who always eats at McDonald's. I always get California rolls. This one was fine. Bonus points on the tobiko, minus for the mushy interior. B-
Eel and avocado roll: Yeah, so I'm even so American that if I order two rolls, both have avocado in them. Anyway, I forget what this one was like, so make your own judgment as to what its quality must have been.
In sum, this place is OK. You can do worse, but you can probably do a lot better. B-
