My very good friend treated me to a very expensive hotpot dinner couple months ago, and I wanted to reciprocate her kind gesture by taking her to a “nice” Italian restaurant for dinner last night. Although the owner’s mother is my colleague from work, but that was not a decision-making matter. I chose the restaurant because it is close to my friend’s office, we both like Italian food, and it has a rating of 4.5 of 5 on Openrice. Although the owner’s mother is my colleague from work, but that was not a decision-making matter. I chose the restaurant because it is close to my friend’s office, we both like Italian food, and it has a rating of 4.5 of 5 on Openrice.
I told my colleague this Tuesday that I would be going to her family’s restaurant Friday, and she call me Friday afternoon and asked for the time and name I used for the booking so she could inform her son that I was going there in the evening.
I got there at 7:30 pm and identified myself with the son. I never asked for a discount or anything free, i.e., dessert, though. I truly believe if I pay my meal at certain price, I should receive the value of the food/services equal to what I paid. Of course, I was wrong with that mindset at this restaurant.
My following comments are on 3 items only:
1.Bread – The bread was stale to start with and was diced up in small cubes. They put the bread in a recyclable brown paper bag, and sprinkle with sea salt. Really? Recyclable brown paper bag with diced stale bread and sea salt? I saw the photos from other review but the bread that I got last night was far different. Although in those photos the bread was also served in a brown paper bag, but it was placed in a bamboo container. Also, the bread looked more fresh and not diced up.
2.Vinegar – There was a classic looking glass container with olive oil on one side and vinegar on the other. Traditionally it should be balsamic vinegar for Italian restaurants, but I am not sure it was balsamic vinegar served last night. The sourness of balsamic should be very subtle, and the more expensive it is, the more subtle the sourness. I was not asking for expensive vinegar but since I have balsamic vinegar for my salad every day, I am very sure either it was not balsamic vinegar used or the restaurant has mixed it with some cheaper vinegar to lower the cost.
3.Main Course - Both my friend and I ordered the set dinner, and my main course was seafood fettuccine. However, the portion for my pasta was so small that it was more like a side dish or primi for a traditional Italian meal; but there was no secondi for the set dinner.
My conclusion is either I went to the wrong restaurant, or something was not ordinary at the restaurant last night. Take your chance if you want to try this place for you meal.
