I never quite knew what PHD was. I'd always assumed the name had something to do with Hong Kongers' desires to feed their children chemicals that purportedly made them smart. Like those strange PHD pills they sell.But-- duh-- I was talking to a friend of mine who used to work at Pizza Hut (like Garth Brooks, I too have friends in low places) and he informed me that PHD = Pizza Hut Delivery. But-- duh-- I was talking to a friend of mine who used to work at Pizza Hut (like Garth Brooks, I too have friends in low places) and he informed me that PHD = Pizza Hut Delivery. Not that Pizza Hut doesn't make the scariest pizzas in HK, but my friend assured me that PHD had a more palatable menu.
Digging around, I found that though Pizza Hut and PHD are operated by the same company, they don't follow the same recipe or menu, and are somewhat independent. PHD does hand-tossed crust mainly.
So with my wife out of town and no desire to put my pants on, I ordered a large pepperoni pizza. I don't even think you can get something this simple at Pizza Hut: This was about as close to a pepperoni pizza from a US Pizza Hut that I can imagine. There was the sweet sauce, the loads of congealed cheese, the thinly sliced, and almost-crispy pepperonis. I mean, we're not talking New York style vs. Chicago vs. Naples or whatever. This is US fast food. Depending on who you are and what you want, that may be a good or a bad thing. It was precisely what I wanted. Does it hold up as leftovers (pictured, w/ added chili flakes)? Well... define "hold up"? As much as you'd expect? The hand-tossed crust deflates and the cheese releases its grease upon the plate. Better than in your stomach, I guess? It certainly made several "good" meals for me.
I'll say this. If you want good pizza delivered and you're in Hong Kong... hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. OK, but now if you're an American and grew up on Pizza Hut (like yours truly) and in a fit of bachelorish desperation you want to be reminded of your childhood, which wasn't all that great, but seems pretty good now that it's so far in the past... you could do worse. And it beats Mr. Gatti's.
題外話/補充資料:
Delivery quote: 60 min; delivery time: 50 min. Never happened to me in HK that delivery time was under the quote, AHEM Jacomax especially. $144 for large pizza.
