M&S Cafe is a cozy hideout tucked away inside the Marks and Spencer store in Cityplaza. I've noticed it's a favorite destination for the Japanese housewives and retirees in the Taikoo area, who enjoy hanging out there in the afternoons with a pot of tea or cup of coffee and while away the lazy hours.The food here is strongly reminiscent of American college canteen fare, so I come from time to time to "relive" those memories. The food here is strongly reminiscent of American college canteen fare, so I come from time to time to "relive" those memories. In short, it's kind of unhealthy but not bad at all in taste.
Lasagna with salad ($78): I'm not a lasagna fan but noticed this seems to be a popular main course so decided to give it a shot. It tastes exactly like what I used to eat in college - layers of egg pasta, over-salty (and over-oily) beef bolognese, topped with bubbling hot tomato puree, cheese and bechamel sauce. Eat this at your own peril if you're on a diet! However, the ideal American comfort food. The serving is quite substantial so if you're not too hungry, bring a friend to share. The salad tastes pretty fresh but the sauce is almost tasteless (a very bland mustard vinaigrette) and comes with juicy slices of fresh tomato.
Bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese ($45): The bagel doesn't taste like the American type and tastes a bit less dense, which I actually find pretty good. This is toasted and then spread with a decent tasting cream cheese and thin slices of Scottish salmon.
In short, the ingredients used are fairly fresh, though probably not appealing to the health conscious. Taste is so-so. The upside is that it's not too crowded, has comfortable seats, provides a clean and airy atmosphere, and offers wifi.
