With CNY creeping up fast, everyone in HK are rushing around running last minute errands, meeting friends and work colleagues for lunches before the CNY holiday break. It was kinda tricky to find a good place to have lunch today i.e. the eve of CNY in HK Central and lots of places were either closed or very busy! We fancied having japanese and fortunately Shou Zen in The Pemberton 7/F on Bonham Strand was open.We arrived pretty early at noon, so the restaurant was still quite empty so no issues
We arrived pretty early at noon, so the restaurant was still quite empty so no issues getting a table but were told that we had a 1hr window to finish our meal. I ordered the sashimi set and my wife had the unagi don set. Both orders arrived promptly and we tucked into our respective set meals.
My sashimi set comes with the usual side dishes of miso soup, pickled veg, steam egg custard or chawan mushi and bowl of rice. Fairly standard fair and nothing to complain about. However I was pleasantly surprise to see very well cut and generous thick cuts of very fresh fish and assortment of seafood on a bed of ice. The sashimi set comprised of 7 types of seafood, 14 pieces in total this includes a large oyster, two sweet shrimps, two scallops, two slices of regular akami (tuna), two slices of sake and three slices of hamachi and two slices of kanpachi.
My wife's unagi don was also very decent and she had no complains.
The meal ends with a choice of hot drinks and the coffee we had was pretty decent too.
Service was okay but I think the wait staff were a little understaffed today.
I would rate Shou Zen as pretty good quality Japanese at reasonable price considering location in Central. The Sashimi set is 280 HKD so it's not at the low end but I think for the price you are getting decent size portions and very fresh seafood. It's definetly above average quality and worth trying out for lunch or indeed a more leisurely dinner.
