Gyu-Kaku is a popular Japanese yakiniku restaurant originally from Japan. But in Japan it's an all you can eat restaurant. But in Hong Kong, it's only a la carte. And that is when we went.


Menu is in English and Chinese. You basically choose what set you want and how long: either 60 minutes or 100 minutes. And then you get one dish of two choices of  meat, type of sauce and all you can eat buffet area. They also offer rice bowls if you don't want to grill meat. But seriously ... why????

The buffet area has a wide selection of everything from soup, salad, drinks, dessert, ice cream and rice along with basic vegetables for grilling.

They have this interesting item called shake shake salad. You grab a container of salad, add salad dressing, recap and shake away.

The place is very big. There are little robots at the ends. I thought they were used to serve the food but I guess during lunch time, there isn't that much of need for them so they are parked there with finished plates to take back to the kitchen.

This is set A ($89 for one hour): Aichi Chicken drumstick (miso) and beef tripe (miso). You apparently only get two pieces each. A bit stingy. The chicken had a slight gamey taste. I have no idea why boyfriend ordered beef tripe because I would not have ordred that. I would have chosen kidney or liver. But oh well ... I guess he didn't hear me. The tripe was rubbery. Definitely not something you should be grilling.

This is set C ($119 for 60 minutes):  Premium Skirt Steak (salted butter) and Premium US SRF Angus Wagyu Karubi (charcoal grilled garlic sauce). The quality of the meat was much better.  Juicier and tender. Though the taste of the beef was not too strong.

Food was a bit average. Quality of the meat was not that great. But at least the buffet section had a lot of variety. Doubt we'd be back.

However, when we were leaving, we discovered the claw machine shop next door. Apparently, it's owned by the same restaurant group with plenty of coupons up for grabs. If only we had known beforehand, we would have tried grab a coupon for a free upgrade.
