As an American, a hamburger is comfort food. It's not eat-it-all-the-time food, but sometimes you get cravings and you just want a good burger. Such cravings led us to BC on Halloween. The regular booth seats were all taken, so we ate at the long bar/ bench in the back. It was absolutely freezing: the air conditioner was right above us and turned on full blast. Maybe the servers and staff didn't notice because they were moving around so much and in the kitchen, and maybe the other tables were bet
The regular booth seats were all taken, so we ate at the long bar/ bench in the back. It was absolutely freezing: the air conditioner was right above us and turned on full blast. Maybe the servers and staff didn't notice because they were moving around so much and in the kitchen, and maybe the other tables were better? But I'm very unlikely to come back for this reason alone.
I ordered the #2, a cheddar cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. The patty is described as 5oz, which is a quarter larger than a McDonald's quater pounder, so not super substantial. (Remember that a quarter pounder loses about an ounce when cooked.) They don't ask you how you want it cooked, but then, they don't really have a lot of leeway. The lettuce and tomatoes were nice and fresh and crisp, and the cheddar had a decent cheddary zing to it. I liked the bun as it mostly faded into the background.
You have to look at this place in context. It is clearly riding the HK "burger craze", but is just as clearly not trying to directly compete with places like Butcher's Club or Beef & Liberty. Those places are about having the best burgers with the best ingredients, like duck fat fries or dry aged beef. This place reminded me more of In N Out or 5 Guys: not even upscale enough to be called 'fast casual'-- fast food, but aimed at people who think McDonald's burgers are cruel shades of the form of a burger. It's pretty good like that. I think the burger is better than CaliBurger in Wan Chai, which is also of the genre. Rating: good for a fast food burger, not in competition with the good places.
I also got onion rings, a pickle, and some fries. I'll start with the fries. I didn't think they were all that great. A little mushy inside. They certainly weren't bad, and the restaurant had the good sense to stock Heinz rather than Del Monte ketchup. Rating: mediocre.
The onion rings were very crispy, and the onions inside were soft and sweet, almost to the point of melted. They were in the genre of Burger King onion rings (I mean, by the kind of breading they had on), which isn't my favorite, but they were very well executed. rating: decent.
The (half) pickle was very large, and very good. My wife thought it might have been the best pickle we've found it HK; I'm a little partial to the dills that occasionally show up in the City'Super deli, but those are softer and more sour, so I can see liking these better. Anyway, I recommend the pickle if you're a pickle fan like me. Rating: fantastic.
For drinks I got a Big Wave Bay IPA, I believe, and my wife got a spiked shake, the "Cinnamon Roll": vanilla ice cream, fireball cinnamon whiskey, salted caramel. She got it because she was a fan of salted caramel, and this is the only spiked shake with it on the menu. She wasn't big on the drink, however; it was a little on the thin side, and the fake-ish cinnamon flavor in the whiskey wasn't that great. Rating: not really into it. (Beer was good though.)
The real rub was the bill:
2 cheesburgers x $88: $176
Fries: $30
Onion rings: $38
Pickle: $18
Beer: $68
Milkshake: $88
Food total: $268
Drink total: $156
Total: $418
Roughly 54 US dollars. That's not a cheap night out... and it's a fast food place. Admittedly, we got a lot, including drinks. But it's similar the price of a similar meal at Butcher's Club (2 burgers, 2 orders of fries, a beer, an ice cream float w/ a shot of bourbon = $385, about the difference of a pickle). The burgers alone are pricier than, to take a random example, Shake Shack in Covent Garden, London ($88 vs. $75HKD). I said they weren't competing with Butcher's Club, but for the price, they ought to be!
My final verdict is that the place is too uncomfortable (air conditioning, perhaps because of where I was seated) and too pricey (relative to quality) to warrant a return visit. There's literally nothing special here (pickle excluded).
