Though Hong Kong may have many things, there is one thing that I missed a lot. A bagel. I love that round ring of doughy bread with a crispy exterior. But I could never get one here. Relegated to the frozen ones from the supermarket, I eventually gave up on the search.Recently, a friend of boyfriend's informed me that there was a new coffee shop in town that also sold bagels. Recently, a friend of boyfriend's informed me that there was a new coffee shop in town that also sold bagels. She informed me that this place was legit. So, on one Sunday, I went to Central to give it a try.
Located in Li Yuen Street West is a rather small yet spacious shop. You pay cash only. There is no 10% service charge. Menu is in English only. They serve bagels of various types for $25 each or 6 for $125. They also sell bagel sandwiches, soups and salads.
I ordered a bagel sandwich called a Hampton ($80). This was made up of grilled chicken breast, pesto, Camembert cheese, candied walnuts, sun dried cranberries, arugula, toasted peppercorns and cream cheese. You get to choose what type of bagel you want and I decided on poppy seed. It was made to order and wrapped in paper.
Opening it up, they neatly sliced it in half for easier eating. The bagel was a decent size.
There was a good amount of filling. Everything held together nicely without it all falling apart. Biting in, the bagel was delicious. A nice crispy exterior and doughy interior. How I like it. The filling was fantastic. The chicken was not dry and nicely seasoned. I loved how they had actual chunks of Camembert, I love soft cheeses like Camembert and it went excellent with the cranberries.
I added a caffe latte for $35. The coffee was excellent. Aromatic and strong without being bitter. There was a small amount of foam and a good milk to espresso ratio.
I will definitely be back and next time also buy some bagels to take with me. I didn't get any this time as I was not heading home, but definitely next time. I saw they had a cranberry bagel. I should try that next time. Sounds delicious.
