It's a well-known fact that the whole Western area on the HK Island is undergoing a major facelift due to the impending train railway. It's a well-known fact that the whole Western area on the HK Island is undergoing a major facelift due to the impending train railway. From time to time, I would just suddenly want to go back and see how Sai Wan is changing, just like what I did the other day. Needless to say, lots of old stores are gone but fortunately, they were not replaced by chain stores. The new stores are usually those you would find in soho or 'poho', and indeed you can see them in the whole Sai Wan or Sai Ying Pun area. They are usually restaurants serving 'western cuisine' or stores selling wines or steaks or organic food.
We walked to High Street Grill and could see there were quite a lot of people in there. KK and I decided to try it ourselves. It's a large restaurant with a high ceiling. But the place is packed with tables and chairs and one could feel quite crowded. During lunchtime it would be the safest to make a booking.
We weren't sure what a Toasties was and we suspected that it just meant sandwiches. We ordered it as it was only $45. The Toasties was placed on a wooden board and it turned out to be a panini.
We picked cheese and ham and we could see there were quite a few layers of ham. After being toasted the cheese was half-melted. The toasties was warm and although I didn't really know what a Turkish Bread was, this Toasties was probably one of the best panini I have had before. The bread was crispy on the outside and a bit chewy. It's really really good.
From time to time I would have my 'occasional eggs benedict addiction'. In fact we ordered one because we saw one on the table besides ours and then my addiction got the best of me. You can pick ham, salmon or mushrooms to go with the muffin and eggs at the same price. We picked salmon so actually, what we ordered was Eggs Royale, not Eggs Benedict.
The eggs benedict looked nice, as expected. I like the sharp colour of the food on the white plate and the side salad looked fresh. The English muffins were definitely perfectly toasted with crispy edges. We found more than 1 layer of salmon on the muffins and the runny egg yolks were oozing out from the egg once we cut it. The combination of slightly crispy and warm muffins, salmon and the eggs could only mean tastiness! What's more was the hollandaise sauce. In the past when I had eggs benedicts elsewhere, sometimes the whole thing was covered with hollandaise sauce and the sauce could be quite overbearing. But not here. Here the right amount of hollandaise sauce was just an addition to complement the muffin and the salmon.
Usually when I see pancakes on the menu, I order one. High Street Grill serves banana and blueberry pancakes. The three pancakes were topped with banana and berries and came with ice cream and syrup, the latter is not mentioned on the menu. We found that the whipped cream as listed on the menu was missing and asked for it from a waitress who replied that whipped cream was not on the menu. Normally I wouldn't lose my temper over these things and I just asked her to read the menu herself. Of couse, this little 'situation' did not ruin my mood in enjoying my food.
The pancakes were quite thick and a bit bland but they were good with the ice cream, syrup and whipped cream. The honeycomb ice cream was a bit like vanilla ice cream and was not too sweet.
After the savory and the sweet came the ending coffee. The left one was latte and the right one was cappuccino. The coffee under this restaurant group has always been consistent and good, they all look the same too.
Some more walk from Sai Wan to Central after brunch. I am sure the next time I come to the Western district, it will be a new district.
