After living in Japan over seven (7) years, and having tasted a number of that country's astonishingly delicious foods, it's always a pleasure to enjoy a meal that whisks me back to the true flavour of Japan, and Toritama did just that. This is yakitori at its' finest.

Every bite was delicious and served up just off the grill. The kitchen set-up is simple, with staff accepting orders and preparing them for the yakitori master to cook, which allows for all the proper finishing touches before he places the meat right onto your plate. This is service ala Japan, and the results are impeccable.

We began with the Ninniku Tamarizuke (68HKD), a chilled garlic marinated in heavy, rich, sweet soy sauce. It was gorgeous, and, of course, not overly garlicky. The sweetness of the soy sauce contrasts against the flavour of the garlic, which left this reviewer with the remembrance of fabulous garlic dishes gone before. It was difficult not to simply gobble up the entire portion of this fabulous dish.

From there, dishes kept flowing from the kitchen, with the real highlights being the Hatsu (38HKD), Maruhatsu (42HKD) and Leba (38HKD). Chicken heart can sometimes be crunchy and difficult to palate, and chicken liver is a difficult taskmaster if handled improperly; however, the internal organs served up at Toritama were fresh, lightly salted, and delightfully succulent. Paired with draft Suntory Premium Malt's (78HKD), I was reminded of one of the best yakitori experiences I had in Japan, only to discover that Toritama had surpassed it completely.

We finished the meal with a marvelous Mitarashi Ice (50HKD), a soy-based ice cream drizzled lightly with a rich, complex soy sauce reduction. Again, I had to hold myself from gobbling it up too quickly.

Overall, Toritama does yakitori only, and it does it extremely well. Let's hope this venue stays around HK long enough to discover a following. I'm certainly interested in returning.
