My friend and I came to Diamond Hill to watch the Great Gatsby, but we wanted to grab a bite first. We stumbled across this restaurant because I was craving Shanghai food, and boy was I glad we chose this. First off, we had to wait for a table even though I could see 4-5 empty tables inside the place. The moment we sat down, there was a small appetizer of spicy cucumbers (I like this dish no matter what), and it was okay--not exactly mind shattering.
The spicy pork noodle was scrumptious. I wasn't sure whether we were just hungry and this happened to be the first dish served, but the soup base was thick, rich, and the flavor was JUST perfect--full fragrant of sesame and just the right amount of spiciness where you don't have to sip your tea after every bite. It's a nice one
The steamed dumpling was so-so. It's not bad, but I find it a bit too salty and MSG'd for me. It's not something I"ll order again when I revisit this restaurant (which I will for sure!)
The Spicy wonton is definitely tooooooo sweet! The dumpling itself is nice, but GAWD, I had one and I couldn't have another. I felt like I had 2 spoons full of sugar.
Saving the good stuff for last, this specially fried tofu was out-of-this-world. At first I thought it was just normal deep fried tofu, but the chewy exterior was actually something else. It was thin but had a certain density to it that made you want to take bites after bites. The sauce itself was gorgeous--sweet and flavorfully filled with spices and onions. We ate the whole plate
Last but not least is the mixed veggie soup. I wanted something light and simple. The soup was very hot (just the way I like it), the veggies weren’t over cooked and the aged ham added just the right amount of saltiness into the dish.Overall, it was just the two of us having the meal (yes, we ordered and ate a lot, don’t judge! ) and when the check came, we couldn’t have been more happier. We ordered so many dishes and the total came to $220! Best deal ever.
