Those who know me know that I love Mak's Noodles on Wellington. I happened to be in the Sai Ying Pun area and saw this joint, decided to give it a go.The owner is really friendly. He found us an English menu, told us about how he and his father served wonton noodles at the HK convention center (this is explained in Chinese on the menu), and pointed out the many Michelin recommendations-- I take it, not for this location. He found us an English menu, told us about how he and his father served wonton noodles at the HK convention center (this is explained in Chinese on the menu), and pointed out the many Michelin recommendations-- I take it, not for this location. I'm confused about the relations between the Mak's, but this location seems strongly allied with the place on Wellington.We got the set C which comes with 2x brisket noodle soup; 1x wonton noodle soup; 1x dumpling noodle soup; and some gailan w/ oyster sauce.
The food is great. I'm really a brisket noodles guy and not a wonton in superior soup guy, and I really like the broth here. It's rich and meaty, anise-y, and a little on the greasy side. As best I can tell, the chilli paste at the table is the same as the stuff at Wellington (which is not true for every "Mak" restaurant-- the Max Mak's has a different sauce). I know that some people hate on it-- the Death Noodle blog said the sauce was "store bought"-- but I really like it, I think it's reasonably spicy and nicely rounds out the flavors in the soup.
With regard to the noodles, I rather liked the version here. They were very toothsome, and I had a little trouble biting through them (that's a good thing). I also thought they were robust flavor-wise. I would totally come back here to fill a brisket noodle craving. Excellent, A
The dumpling soup came with five large dumplings. I think the fillings were mushroom, pork, shrimp, and spring onion. The crunch in the dumpling surprised me at first. The fillings have a nice texture that's hard to describe. This is my least favorite menu item, but I can say that it's done well. Good, B
The wonton soup is packed with wontons; this picture is taken after we'd already eaten two of them. They're pretty standard and I find it hard to get all that excited about them. Good, B.
The vegetables were a deep green, very bitter, and I thought just a tad overcooked. C+At the end of the day, I come to Mak's for beef brisket soup. This place does an excellent version, with decent-sized portions, and the sauce I like, so I will be back. Should you go out of your way to come here? Probably not. But if you live close by, it's great fare for a great price. $139 for everything we got, so less than $30 a dish.
