Pho Le states that they are from Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City to  be exact. Curious, boyfriend and I decided to give it a try. As you know, I love that simple bowl call pho. So if this place says they are a branch from Vietnam and they specialize in one thing and one thing only: pho. It must be good, right?

Located inside APM shopping mall, it was a bit cramped. There were tables but there was also a long communal table that was allocated like a ramen bar.

Menu was in the form of a check off list. It's in English and Chinese. There is no 10% service charge and you pay the cashier. It was simple with a listing of the pho available and all were beef pho. This definitely looked promising!

Sugar Cane Juice ($16). I started off with a drink of sugar cane juice. This was really excellent. It was packed with sugar cane and I could sense that it wasn't diluted with too much water.

Pho with Well Done Beef, Medium Rare Beef and Beef Meat Balls ($58). As first time here, boyfriend and I decided to go big or go home. We ordered the one with everything in it..

The herbs, bean sprouts, chili peppers and lime were presented in a pretty glass.

But I wasn't here for the prettiness. I was here for the pho. And? Sad. Instead of the rich beef broth that I had in Vietnam, what I got was the usual weak MSG induced broth that I find in a majority of Hong Kong Vietnamese  restaurants. The beef was fairly ok but not a strong beef taste. The beef meatballs didn't have much beef taste. This bowl of noodles was not the same one I had in Vietnam. This bowl was exactly what I find in a majority of places in Hong Kong. The staff all had t-shirts saying "What the Pho?" What the pho indeed.

Garlic Butter Chicken Wing ($32). We shared a plate of garlic butter chicken wings. These were utterly disgusting.  The wings were just fried and then covered in butter and a mound of garlic. I honestly have never had butter chicken like this before. Usually, it's deep fried in butter. Not deep fried and then smeared with butter and garlic.

For a place that claims they are the famous Pho Le from Ho Chi Minh City, it makes me wonder ... what happened to have it become just like the other unauthentic Vietnamese restaurants in Hong Kong? I'm unsure if it was new and staff was still working out the kinks but food delivery was  bit scattered with waiters asking if this was your order or not to each customer. Don't they have a system? Sadly enough the pho was a no. But the sugar cane juice was top notch. But that's not why I was here. Won't be back.
