After trying out the fried chicken at The Alley- sis and I hungrily stumbled over to Aberdeen Street to see what all the buzz was about. We got to the front of the shop and was surprised by how packed it was (it was after 9:30pm!) There were only a few seats at the bar left and one final table. We snagged the table! Woo Hoo.

…But we gave up our seats to a bigger party who stumbled in a little bit later and then we went to the bar! It’s fine…because the bar had all the fun action. I ordered myself a refreshing Lime Seoul cocktail with Damsol Pine Soju, fresh lime juice and tonic, HK$95.

Apart from the signature fried chicken which can be found at the market, we have also try some of their other food items which can be found at the restaurant just across the street.

Cacio Pepe e Noci Rice Cakes

The restaurant uses a type of soft rice cake, prepared with Pecorino Romano cheese, walnuts, black pepper.

The Korean fried chicken are also very substantially made in bite size pieces, moist and tender boneless chicken covered with a popcorn coating. The dish pairs with four selective dips, salt and pepper, honey mustard, barbecue, sweet and spicy sauce, but truth to be told the marinate on its own is already the tasteful gochujang spicy sauce.

I first came across Moyo in an article about the new restaurants opening up in 2015. The concept, and pictures were instantly grabbing as I personally am liking Korean food more and more (in particular fusion Korean or new styled Korean). Korean food is a great cuisine to fit the modernised tastes of world’s food critics these days!
On with the environment, the restaurant feels very cozy with a simple and modern design. Reflected throughout the small black plating they use to the tables and chairs and the lighting, the restaurant is meant to provide the customers an elegant, simplified yet relaxed feeling. Nothing too fancy around here.
The restaurant is of medium size (for the new restaurant standards the days) with a marble bar table at the end where you can eat and watch appetisers and deserts being made. If you have a large party of more than 6, you may feel a little cramped here.
As I made no reservations, I was seated at the bar table. Seated away, I started to observe appetisers being made and man they looks delicious!

Rating: 7.5/10

**************************Food******************************
Rating Scale from 1-5
I realise I am quite harsh on these, but for something to reach a 5 it has to be absolutely perfect. A 5 means la crème de la crème of its type and category; my point of view is that there is no such thing as perfect in texture, taste, presentation, smell etc and a 5 is virtually impossible.
0-1: Horrific, inedible
1-2: Will not order it again, and it's below average
2-3: Average joe food. Many places can replicate or make this.
3-4: Quite good and tasty. The higher end of 3 represents that the dish is identifiable to the restaurant and has its own distinctive taste and I will consider ordering again.
4-4.9: Very very tasty and the flavours of the dish is unique to the restaurant. In particular in the mid to higher ends to the 4, the food is almost proprietor-level good.
5: Pure bliss and so perfect that it's inexpressible.

I immediately called up two other friends so that we can share more dishes! Hah.

The kimchee bruschetta was refreshing, and a great combo but this is simply too easy to replicate. There was no particular complexity or hints of ingredients that was added to give it an extra layer of flavour.

The kimchies were all very refreshing, and I enjoyed everyone one of the mini dishes that were made. Though these are normally provided for as a free appetiser in traditional Korean restaurants, these are well prepared and acidity in each of the kimchi dishes were just right. It's a great way to start the meal.

Appetiser 3: Marinated Tofu Salad (3.6/5)

This salad dish was extremely refreshing and the dressing that was provided matches the tofu very well. The salad was fresh and the apples provided just sufficient acidity. They have also paired up crunchy pieces in the salad which adds up to the texture of the salad. I've always had an affinity of adding crunchiness to salads.

Main 1: Spicy Moyo Ramen (3.6/5)

Always a staple dish in Korean restaurants, this bowl of noodles was cooked just right with ample of spiciness to it. It will give you the feeling of burning, and addictive sensation from the soup and the side veggies. The soup was not too watery as are some places, and it wasn't full of MSG...spicy, flavourful and mouth watering!

Main 2: Korean Fried Chicken Balls (3.3/5)

What Korean restaurant can call itself Korean without some Fried Chicken? Well this is Moyo's rendition of its fried chicken which is more like a nugget (boneless) than the traditional fried chicken. It came with four types of sauces which frankly only one or two matched the chicken well. What I enjoyed about the nuggets were how they didn't feel overly fried, my throat didn't feel scratchy or swollen even after multiple pieces of chicken. However, it also needs to pack a bit more flavour to the chicken itself, and swap out two of the sauces which didn't complement the chicken too well.

Main 3: Carbonara Rice Cakes (2/5)

This dish sounded interested as it used rice cakes and dressed with a very cheesy carbonara sauce. As a result of its efforts using rice cakes, the dish wasn't one of its highlights. The rice cakes were too soggy and soft, the cheese they used didn't blend in well as a sauce, and the dish was a thick mess. I spoke with the owner who was an Italian born Korean, and gave him my comments and feedback to improve the dish. It's not something I would order again.
**Update: I tried the dish again (friends insisted on trying it), and there were vast improvements to the consistency of the sauce and the sogginess of the rice cake. Although you can never reach 'al dente' with rice cakes, it was a vast improvement from the previous one I tried. However, I still wouldn't order this as it is a) filling, b) still not the best dish at the restaurant.

**************************Service******************************
The overall service varies from great as I spoke and was served by the owners of the restaurant. He was a Italian born Korean who also grew up there, and he had real passion to the food he was trying to share ie. infusing italian culture to Korean food.

***************************Conclusion**************************

I would come to the restaurant again, but be more selective to what I'm eating as some dishes are significantly better than others. The food is simple and clean cut, there was not too much complexity and layering of flavours nor fancy plating that was particularly memorable. However I did enjoy my time there and the surrounding and decent food would bring me back again (and it has).

There are a couple seats directly facing Aberdeen St and it is rather unpleasant becuase of the noise. We sat close to the entrance as well so..it was rather distractingly noisy. There's a long table at the back of the room, right next to the loo. Not very pleasant either and extremely packed. All in all not a particularly comfortable space. Would probably want to leave after all the food is cleared from the table - not good for long deep conversations.

Service:
Below par. Water refills weren't timely. Although the waiters were polite, they weren't particularly helpful.

Food:
The main problem with the food...is that there isn't much variety. The menu is a one-page affair with some variations on basic staples...disappointingly homogeneous!

I'm not a big fan of spicy food so I didn't really enjoy these pancakes. However, in terms of texture, the topmost later was quite crisp - and the middle was quite pasty. The crisp layer was very, very thin...too thin. Overall, too doughy, *floppy*, and too spicy for me - I wanted to taste more green onion.

According to Moyo's Fb - this dish is "Stir fried outside then steamed in bean paste broth for two hours, with green shallots and rocket kimchi". The pork belly was tender but you need to add sauce to make it tasty. Also, omitting the fat, it's not really enough for 4 girls to share. Portions are somewhat small.

Again, what you see is what you get and there's nothing special about this salad - tofu, lotus crisps and bettroot crisps, greens...doused in a failsafe sesame dressing. Not impressive at all and wouldn't go for this again.

Conclusion:
Perhaps we should've tried the kimchi disco fries or the carbonara rice cakes, which seem to be the more popular items here. However, I am not minded to return. So we'll leave it at that. Also, the four of us left feeling extremely unsatisfied and basically ended up at another resto.

Perhaps it would be better to come solely for the speciality items - and fill yourself up with a bowl of fishball noodles prior to or after the visit.

Things got started the traditional Korean way with a small plate of seafood pancake ($78). This was done the old fashion way with a flavorful batter, some seafood bits and lots of green onion.

What I like most about this pancake was its size. It's perfect. With the traditional ones, I often got stuffed after 2 to 3 slices and ended up missing out on the other dishes (Grade: 3/5)!

Next up was something slightly less conventional - Kimchi disco fries ($108) which was homemade fries served with kimchi, purple onion, pork, cheese, shiracha and sour cream. We had something very similar at Seoul's Vatos Urban Tacos and it was an experience that left a pretty good impression on us.

This one unfortunately tasted a little bland to start although it fared slightly better after we mixed everything together from top to bottom (Grade: 2/5).

For main course, our original plan was to go after their carbonara rice cakes (topokki). We have always enjoyed Korean rice cakes with a fusion twist and who could resist the combination of Parmegiano Reggiano, Pecorino, egg yolk and pancetta anyways? But then we realized that we had the same dish at School Food quite a few times already. So after weighing our options, we decided to go with their Bulgoghi ($198) instead.

Like topokki, bulgoghi is another popular Korean dish. They had their marinated beef served on a bed of seasonal mushrooms and stir-fried onion. The beef was very tender and juicy, which is always nice. I also like the minimal seasoning with Korean BBQ sauce which was subtle and not too overpowering (Grade: 3.5/5).

I had a quick chat with one of the pretty waitresses here and decided to ask her about the name of the restaurant - what does MOYO mean in Korean? She smiled and replied, "It means together, getting together or gather....".

Although a little noisy at times, there is no question that this is a great place to get together and share some really good Korean food.

We had a bibimbap and spicy pork with rice, both are very good. The dishes had very delicate flavor and is way more refined than the mainstream korean food in similar price range.

The green tea red bean tiramisu is equally good. Overall the price is very reasonable, and we enjoy the not-so-crowded atmosphere of the place. The restaurant keeper is very enthusiastic in introducing the food to us and I would totally recommend this place to anyone who passes by the area.

It is located in front of PMQ so it is easy to find.

We ordered the Kimchi Bruschetta (78HKD), which is very tasty and works surprisingly well!!After we had the Carbonara Ricecakes (148HKD), with two italian cheeses and egg yolk, the ricecakes had an incredible texture, chewy and the sauce was very Italian! We continued our dinner with Bulgoghi (198HKD) and Pork Bossam (188HKD), both very good. The first it is beef marinated in soy sauce, meat very tender very flavourful!
The second comes with an amazing Kimchi and the pork was so soft that we all loved it!

Our last dish was the Korean Fried Chicken and we all finished it in 10 minutes. Tender inside and crispy outside. Not oily just perfect. It came with 4 sauces, with the honey mustard being the best. I still think it is very hard to find good fried chicken, mainly because the skin of many places is not very crispy. But Moyo really did well with their chicken!
The vibe in the restaurant was very cool, thanks to a friendly and young staff together with a cool playlist. They still dont have their liquor license so it is BYOB, but they promised to stock different kond of sojus and ricewines!

Kimchi pancakes
is usually my must order item at any Korean restaurant! This one was mixed with pork as well. The dish was unusually not my favourite of the night – the taste was quite normal and less fusion-y than the other dishes. All in all, still delicious (though be wary of my Kimchi pancake bias) but I thought it could be made crisper!

Kimchi disco fries *must order*

This was my favourite dish of the night – unexpectedly so too! Mix the whole thing up and the tad spice, kimchi and pork belly just make an awesome sauce for the fries.

Korean fried chicken with four sauces

I’m a pretty stringent chicken eater – the meat has to be juicy, tender and a lil fatty. The sauces were great but the chicken meat just lacked those key characteristics.

Carbonara rice cakes

I tried a similar dish at School Food (a popular restaurant chain from Korea) and was… Pretty appalled and put off. The menu at Moyo was not sooo extensive, so given the high load my stomach requires, I gave this one a shot! Here, the carbonara sauce was thick and strong, which goes very well with the also-thick rice cakes! Definitely would recommend this dish for the carbonara lovers.

Green tea tiramisu with red bean

They only had two desserts on the menu and we managed to stomach them both – well the portions are not huge. I love tiramisu and green tea, so this combo would naturally be my favourite. It was super creamy and smooth, while the green tea and red bean flavours went well together, of course.

Ice cream with deep fried tofu cubes

This was super unique and delicious too! You wouldn’t have guessed that those were tofu cubes – they were deep fried and coated with cinnamon (and I think sugar?), which made them taste very much like churros! This went well with the ice cream and could also have been my favourite dessert of the night (can’t really decide… order both)!
