I typically avoid new restaurants for at least 6 months to allow the operation to settle in (or not at all) but someone recommended this pho bar in the LKF area. So, I thought I'd give it a try.I went to the place during the soft opening period and after the lunchtime rush hour. The place seats around 20 around an open kitchen and interior was comfortable and pleasant. The wall by the entrance was decorated with some of the food ingredients on the shelves: bottles of fish sauce, jars of spice
I went to the place during the soft opening period and after the lunchtime rush hour. The place seats around 20 around an open kitchen and interior was comfortable and pleasant. The wall by the entrance was decorated with some of the food ingredients on the shelves: bottles of fish sauce, jars of spices and cans of coffee beans; so far so good.
The set lunch included an appetizer, a main course of pho and a beverage. I selected the soft shrimp and pork roll, the chicken noodle (pho ga) and a lemongrass-ginger drink. The appetizer was served with a side of spicy green papaya salad and a large prawn cracker, all on a banana leaf-lined tray. 3 different sauces were available (peanut, fish sauce/vinegar and fermented chili) and were all made on the premises. The rolls were flavorful and, surprisingly, the shrimp tasted like shrimp and was not just there for texture. The pho had both dark and white meat on top of the noodles, sitting in homemade chicken broth. Lightly blanched red onion and short fat bean sprouts accompanied the bowl. It was the herbs that brought a smile to my face when I tasted the combination of herbs, some of which I recognized, some i did not, PLUS thinly sliced kafir lime leaves. The broth was well seasoned with white pepper and was obviously made with a lot of attention. I picked up the bowl and drained the liquid which I normally would not dare to do at other pho places. The lemongrass-ginger drink was a very refreshing execution and was a nice change from my regular choice of a lime soda.
Portions were generous and the combination of the courses was more than enough to allow me to leave well-fed. The owner topped it off with a cup of dripped coffee on the house. I have to go back again to try the pho bo (beef version) as that will be the other signature dish.
It is an easy place to like when the food does not pretend to be something which it is not. There is a sense of genuineness and sincerity in the overall experience (I cannot comment on authenticity since I am not Vietnamese) and makes me want to go back again, maybe even on a regular basis.
