One of the things I miss a lot now that we haven't been able to travel to Japan is the old style coffee houses. The kind that serves their coffee in a pretty tea cups and have things like pudding and hotcakes. Maybe a plate of house curry with rice. I visited it when it first opened and I did love it. But it's been a while and they apparently now have opened a new branch in Central.  And that is where we went.

The cafe is a bit different than the one in Mong Kok. Less the look of an old style Japanese coffee shop. There are a few resemblences but not exactly.

On one end is the display of pretty coffee cups. You can order a coffee and choose one of these to drink out of if you ask.

Menu is in Japanese, English and Chinese. They have expanded their menu since last time we were here with more variety of hotcakes and sandwiches.

Boyfriend ordered an Ice  Hazelnut Mocha ($48). This was the perfect amount of sweetness that boyfriend liked. The chocolate went well with the hazelnut flavour so it was  rich nutty taste.

As I was in the mood for old school Japanese, I went with a Syphon Coffee ($70). They have three choices of beans: Guatomala, Columbian and Ethiopian. Or they let you do a mix of all three to  create a house blend. I decided on that and chose a cup from the cupboard. The coffee was smooth and clean. A good balance of the nutty and fruity.

We shared a Napolitan ($88) pasta. The quintessential Japanese pasta. The tomato sauce had the wonderful Kagome tomato ketchup taste. The sausages were a bit more fancy than that usual regular weiners. A sprinkle of cheese powder made it simply Japanese.

For dessert we shared a Sonia Mixed Berries Hot Cake ($92). An upgrade from the original. This one packed a punch. Lots of fresh strawberries and blue berries. A scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, strawberry syrup and the best was the strawberry preserve.  All with powdered sugar and almond slices. If that didn't bring a smile to a dessert fan, I don't know what will. It was wonderful. The hot cake was soft and fluffy. The strawberry preserve was wonderfully sweet.

We wanted to order a pudding but we noticed they now have two versions. Unsure which to choose we decided on both.

The Sonia Special Pudding ($38) is the original and it was just as good as I remembered it. Firm yet smooth. A strong eggy custardy taste.  Lots of carameliezd sauce. The whipped cream on top had a slight sweetness.

The new pudding is the Sonia Caramel Latte Pudding ($42). This wasn't in the original menu so we were curious. It was quite nice. It had a strong coffee flavour. The pudding was firm and smooth.

Glad it's kept the standard since originally opening here with a larger menu.
