A while ago, Bake closed it's doors, taking away my beloved cheese tarts forever! But in it's place, the company has brought int Rapl (or in Japan it's called Ringo). Handheld apple pies filled with apple and custard. The first time I came across this was in Taipei. It had newly opened and I gave it a try, falling in love immediately. Located in the Sogo grocery section, it is inhabits the once vacated Bake spot. The entire set up is exactly the same. Ovens are in the back. The finished products are in the front.
There was no one waiting so I decided to get one.
One costs $42. If you by four, it's $160.
The little pie is about the size of the palm of my hand. It was still warm.
The pastry was light and flaky. There was a sweet sticky glaze on top. It was filled with lovely chunky bits of apple with slight taste of cinnamon. It wasn't too sweet as well. There was also a lot of custard that leaked out. The custard was warm with a vanilla taste. It was pretty good. I'd probably purchase again as long as there is no line. I can't wait until they have ice cream.
