Stepping into Veggie SF and their ubiquitous 1950s Americana decor, I half expected Buddy Holly, Marilyn Monroe, or even Marty McFly (Ok, I'm dating myself, I know) to come out of the woodwork and serve me my vegetarian meal du jour. Alas, the careful attention paid to sourcing a compelling and memorable dining environment very clearly didn't extend toward the preparation of the food served, and I left feeling dissatisfied, and even a bit hornswoggled. We started with the Thai Skewers (48HKD), a
We started with the Thai Skewers (48HKD), a faux meat served with tangy Thai sweet dressing. Nothing remarkable to note here. The texture of the Skewers was reasonable though. I’ve had veggie meat before, and the taste and texture of this dish was better than some I’ve had. Regardless, it’s still not really meat, so there is truly no comparison. Pass.
Following the appetizer, I opted for the Shakespeare’s Favorite (138HKD), which was basically just a simple vegetarian curry. I wasn’t even remotely pleased. Curries don’t always have to be extremely spicy to be tasty, but the flavor of this curry was so mild as to almost be unnoticeable. After reviewing their website, so sign of Shakespeare’s Favorite exists in the online menu, so I’m wondering if they already opted to get rid of this dish. That might be a good idea.
The highlight of the evening (and I use that term loosely) arrived on @hangrywifey’s plate: the I Am Fabulous Crispy Black Pepper Soy Patty (148HKD). It was good; neither as decadent as Light Radiant Food’s Black Bean Burger nor as ghastly as The Sissy at The Burger Shop by Shake ‘Em Buns. We called it a highlight because it ended up being the only reasonable dish to arrive on our table. Sure, the atmosphere was fun, but the veggie meals here didn’t entice us to return. When it comes to food, flavour is king. Veggie SF ended up looking a bit like the jester.
All in all, if you’re looking for a fun contemporary atmosphere, Veggie SF is definitely an authentic American-style restaurant. Sadly, the flavours left me wanting, and I didn’t find value for money spent. Seems that vegetarian restaurants in HK may be too niche for their own good.
