紅豆烘焙 (English name: Red Bean) is like any other Hong Kong style bakery. There isn't anything especially special about it. It sells very typical Hong Kong style bread that is found throughout the city. All their goods are labelled in Chinese only but then you can pretty much figure out what they are. However, come around 3 PM and this comes out of the oven! However, come around 3 PM and this comes out of the oven! The French Custard Pudding Bread that has taken the city by storm. There is a place in Hong Kong where there are long queues for this. But then I discovered this place that also is doing this bread. But the best thing? No queues!
They also offer another version of it. The Creme Brulee version. I guess an upgraded one. Curious I got both kinds.
This is the French Custard Bread ($15). I've seen a number of other bakeries that are doing this, recreating the other bakery that created it. But this place actually looks the most similar to that other bakery. Tasting it, it is almost better. The bread is crispy and very fragrant. The custard is super smooth and creamy. A wonderful hint of vanilla can be detecte as well.
They also did an upgrade of it by offering the Creme Brulee Bread ($18). The top has a small bit of crunchy caramelized sugar, making it more sweet. The custard is still goooey and creamy.
While waiting to pay, we also got a Mango Pancake ($15).
What was surprising about this is that unlike most places where it's all cream and mango, this place had a layer of sponge cake on the bottom. This made it less filling. The cake was moist. The cream was slightly sweet and the mango was very sweet. The pancake was nice and thin.
The bread here is quite good. And the best part .. no lines for the popular pudding bread.
