i discovered mike's marvelous restaurant through, believe it or not, a television advert. tucked away in a dark corner of a small mall on one of Hong Kong's busiest areas, I would have never discovered this place without the TV. the restaurant is split into two sections, a more formal restaurant setting and a more relaxed cafe style seating outside their wine shop. . we sat down and ordered the Hong Kong favourite Portuguese chicken, a staple on the cha chan teng menus, as a main. for starter, we had an assorted platter. As for drinks, on hearing that I wanted a "real drink' the waitress led us to the wine shop, where the fun began. This is perhaps the first time, and the only place in HK that will entertain you with a wine tasting before your food arrives. Our pallets were treated to a journey, discovering new white ports and up to an exquisite 20 year old whisky barrow aged port. it was far too soon before our apertisers arrived, already far too merry, we bought two bottles and proceeded with our original intention, to feed. the apertisers were good cafe food, well priced for the quality of ingredients. the mains arrived promptly, the Portuguese chicken was a wonderfully flavoured dish with heavy turmeric sauce, great chicken flavours. Mike was also busy walking around greating the guests, the hospitality from the front of house was great. we finished our meal with a ginger souffle and a ah-hem '"french" toast (Mike, don't be upset, my Portuguese no good la). the souffle was light, candied ginger working with the egg white has a distinct Cantonese flavour to it. very unique. we left merrily drunk, satisfied and euphoric. thanks mike, I'll gladly come here again.
