I've been intrigued by the place for a while given that it's about the only Chinese vegetarian place within a lunch-run's reach of my office. As I didn't have time pressures today I decided to join the lunch scrum and see what was what. Lunch time here is definitely not a sport for the nervous eaters out there, you must wade through the crowds of office workers to place your order by selecting (or in my case pointing at), two or three of the dishes on display, then pay the order-taker and wait in the throng for your number to be called. I do not speak Cantonese which could be a problem (although with a quick spot of googling I learned the number I needed to listen out for - I really should push myself to learn more).
I choose the flowering cabbage, the egg with bitter melon and some patty things which seemed to be potato-y but I'm not certain. It's actually very difficult to rate this food, it's not the kind of thing you'd get at a classy restaurant so I think it needs rating as what it is which is a fast-food style vegetarian lunch. As fast-food style vegetarian lunch it is great, maybe a little greasy, maybe the flavours are quite plain but at $26 actually it's a damn good lunch deal when you consider that a few streets up in the mid levels Mana and Life are charging $100 for a salad (although the quality of the raw ingredients at those establishments is undoubtedly better).
I will definitely be returning to get lunch again and I look forward to trying out the other choices. My one concern is the volume of take-away boxes being used and disposed of. It would be so much better if it were possible to bring your own tupperware.
