It's Ramen Time!
富士山55 (拉麵沾麵專門店)
2014-06-28
I was in TST East around lunch time Wednesday, and decided to try Fujiyama 55 as it's been in business for a few years, and I haven't had a chance to try it out.  It was the first time I had the Tsukemen, where the ramen is served separate from the soup.  I ordered the extra pork flavor dipping and regular (as in tenderness) cook noodle.  After having a few bite of it, I thought I almost felt in love with it.  Most of the time, I found the cold noodles didn't have enough flavour, but dipping it into the semi-hot broth was a nice complement.  So it's perfect to eat Tsukemen in hot summer as it's cooler than your regular styled ramen, and the ramen contained just enough flavor from the dipping.  The pork slices are tender, however, the egg is not fully cooked, which I preferred it a little bit more runny anyway.  The noodle I ordered was the regular cook version, and I thought it's a bit chewy for me, so I guess I would order the softer version next time.  I went with several friends, and their impressions were also similar to mine, we will definately try it again if we are in the area nearby.…Read More

Strange Meat!!!
白熊喫茶店
2014-06-21
What a better way to window shop than to go shopping inside a mall in hot summer. I went to the Telford Plaza at Kowloon Bay, and found a new restaurant - Shirokuma Café there. I passed by this café in Sheung Wan a few times and thought that their Polar Bear logo is kind of cute, so decded to give it a try.Although I was not hungry at that moment (it was around 6:00 p.m.), my friend and I decided to have an early dinner as there was no queue yet. We order a Ramen Salad with Japanese Seasame Dressing and Shirokuma Pork Burger Curry with rice. The Ramen Salad was really really ridiculously small, and taste okay. Should of just charged an extra $10 and made it at least a reasonable looking portion. The Shirokuma Pork Burger Curry with rice smelled good and looked interesting. However, when we tasted the curry, it was really mild, to the point that it tasted like a brown sauce. For the pork burger, we really could not tell if it was pork or beef. Of course, we understand we could not judge the meat because it was minced, so we could not judge it based on texture. However, the taste of the burger was strange, I guess it might of been marinated for too long, so it had no meat flavor at all. We were quite disappointed as this was supposed to be one of their signature dishes. After the meal, I ordered a Hazelnut Curry Coffee, but again I was disappointed. I didn't taste any curry flavor until the last zip of it.  Finally, the service was kind of spotty, one server was nice, another just threw your dish down and left, and the Manager was not the brightest of the bunch. …Read More

Pleasantly Surprised!

This was a first time visit to Kenting Tea House. I liked their simple decor and bright color scheme which resemble the blue skies. We ordered two lunch sets, the Deep Fried Chicken Steak & Taiwanese Meat sauce with Noodle in soup, and Soy Marinated Meat assortment and Noodle in soup.We also ordered the Taiwanese "A" Vegetables with Meat sauce and a plate of Chilled Beancurd with Preserved Duck Egg.The Chicken Steak was surprisingly really good, the meat was tender and was not dry or oily. The best part was the chicken skin, it was really really crispy. When I bite it, I heard the chipping sound of the skin cracking. Both noodles are good. They serve thick noodles which was still a little bit chewy. My friend preferred the soup flavour more. We were surprise the size of the side dishes as they were big in terms of the price ($12-$16). Both side dishes tasted fine, however, I would prefer using the soft tofu instead of hard one, as it was not very smooth.Oh, I almost forgot to mention, the lunch sets came with drinks. My friend said the milk tea was better than some of the cha chan teng.Overall, we like the food and service. For an easy-going place, it was a value deal! Just be warn, if you have kids, this place is kind of tight is spacing their tables.…Read More

Somewhat Overhyped
OVO CAFE
2014-06-11
Well, lucky that I finally got a table after so many tries. This lovely cosy little cafe always have a long queue during lunch hour. My friend and I ordered two set lunches. One set comes with a salad and a mushroom pasta and the other set includes pumkin soup and chili tomato Okra sauce spagetti. The pumpkin soup taste alright, it's sweet and not too thick but it's not very smooth as there are some stringy pumpkin strands in the soup, would of been nice if it was strained. For the spaghetti, the sauce is tasty and feel like mom's healthy cooking. Well, my friend told me her salad is fresh and yummy. We were surprised that they put a big chunk of avacado in it as its a more expensive food materials these days. Althoug she was not impressed by the mushroom pasta because of the small portion.I want to mention that the service is not efficient at all. Although it's not a big place, we had to walk to the self serve counter three times to get the utentials because they refill it seperatly, and this was during lunch hour. I think if they just place the utentials along with the food on the tray like other semi self-serve places such as Delifrance or Oliver's, it would be much better, instead of people walking back and forth.I probably will not try it again until the hype goes down a bit, but I hope their operation and service will be improved by then because the food was all right.…Read More

Simple Lunch
Friendmily
2014-06-08
Checked Openrice to see what's available in Kwun Tong to just have a simple lunch.  What the heck, just pick out something that looks simple and quick.  Decided on Friendmily, kind of an interesting name, so off we go.The 4oz Steak Set actually looks bigger than 4oz to be honest, nothing fancy, just grilled and pour some black pepper sauce on top and there you go.  It looked like a typical steak you find in a lot of places, but as my guest can attest, it was all right. The Seafood Rissotto was a recommended dish.  The portion was kinda of small with only one scallop on top, not sure where the seafood were.  However, it tasted pretty good, risstto was perfectly cooked and just seasoned well, just wish there were a little bit more. The Pork Chop set was the last to arrive.  I guess it was to slowly pan fried so that it remains juicy.  Indeed it was moist and tasty, the portion was just right for lunch, not too heavy but just enough to fill you up. All lunch set came with tea or coffee, additional charges for other drinks.…Read More

Needed a break from the heavy smog hovering over Hong Kong this afternoon.  Had a craving for something sweet to go along with a cup of coffee, decided to give Seasons a try and ordered 2 afternoon tea sets.First up, the Papaya Mousse Cake, really lovely to look at, and as it turned out, it was quite smooth and tasty.  Although it looks more like a Mandarin Orange.  It was not too sweet and just the right portion, although we wanted to order another one, however it was the last one.  The other tea set was just a simple muffin, I chose the Chocalate Banana flavor.  Again not too sweet, the staff warmed it up for us and it was moist and delicious, great with coffee.  Interesting little place in an industrial part of the city.  Definately a pleasant surprise.  Will visit again.…Read More

Simple Weekend Lunch
小南洋
2014-06-01
Have eaten here before, finally decide to contribute a review for this little restaurant inside Domain Mall at Yau Tong.  Ordered 2 set lunches on a hot Saturday afternoon, decided to have the "Singapore Roasted Chicken" set with the "Grandma Roasted Duck" set.  In addition, added a side dish of vegetables and soy sauced tofu with egg.First the "Singapore Roasted Chicken" set tasted like any you find all over the Singapore, kind of bland, but this time it was also kind of on the dry side.  However, the Chicken Oil Rice that accompanied the lunch was nice and tasty.  The boiled vegatable was nothing spacial as expected. The "Grandma Roasted Duck" set was somewhat disappointing, also bland and on the dry side.  It's too bad it was not served with only white rice instead of the Chicken Oil rice, that made it even less appealing after several bites.  The added side dish of Soy Sauce Tofu with Egg was OK, although the tofu was kind of hard and rubbery.Well, since it was just a simple lunch on a hot day, there were no high expectation, therefore wasn't too disappointed either, and a place to sit down to cool off for $50 per head, well it was OK than.…Read More

Oops.....
Oolaa Petite
2014-05-25
Met an old buddy for lunch, decided to try some of the restaurants in Wan Chai next to Pacific Place Three.  Stumbled upon Oolaa Petite, oops..... must not have being lucky, the food was definately forgetful. The signboard had several interesting items out front, the place looked inviting and clean, so why not?  I'll just review my lunch and not my buddy's, I'll explain later.  I had the "Roasted Rosemary Spring Chicken", along with the "Vegetable Fritata" as a starter, and the "Mixed Berries Crepes" for dessert.Let's start with the starter, the dish had a nice name to it "Vegitable Fritata", well it looks and tasted like bland Quiche. Next, the "Roasted Rosemary Spring Chicken".  Yikes, it looked nice, but the meat was dry and it was somewhat on the cold side.  Once you carve it to the bone, you start to see what looks like juices flowing, what a letdown, it was from the moisture one would find after recently defrosting meat from the freezer. Last but not least, the dessert "Mixed Berries Crepes".  That must of been a joke, one bite sized crepes squirted with whipped cream with one piece of banana and 1 rotted blueberry.  Need no further description. OK, I'll explain why no review and pics of my buddy's lunch.  His "Thai Beef Salad", well the beef must have been really chewy (he spitted it out).  His Lamb dish (I believe it was Lamb Lasagne) was only 50% eaten.  My poor buddy, he was left hungry because his order must have been worse than mine.OK, I think everything was prepared way beforehand, we got there at 12:30 before the 1:00 office crowded, we had our food served within 2 minutes, WTH......  Oh well, the service at least was friendly and efficient.…Read More

No Longer a Hidden Secret.....
Kani
2014-05-25
Arrived relatively early (12:00 noon) on a Saturday. The place was fairly spacious and very comfortable, the setting was kind of a surprise considering that it was located in an industrial building in an industrial part of Kwun Tong.  It was nicely air conditioned (not too cold and yet the relative humidity was just fine).  It had an open window area on the opposite side of the semi open kitchen, which was actually 2 seperate kitchens, 1 for the cooked food and 1 for raw items.Kani's weekend menu consisted of several weekend brunch types of items.  It also had pastas as well as several Japanese styled dishes on offer.  We ordered 2 sets to share, one was the "American Breakfast" and the other was "Pasta Carbonera".  We also ordered a regular "Americano Coffee" and "Almond Green Tea Latte", it was nice that drinks were half price if ordered with food. The "American Breakfast" was typical offering one sees in other restaurants.  However, Kani provided a nice touch with several vegatables to complement the meaty items.  There were sauteed mushrooms and tomatos, creamed spinach, and mixed garden greens.  The "American Breakfast" had the traditional eggs, bacon, and sausage.  The Bacon was crisp and tasty, the eggs was pretty but average, the sausage was decent sized but bland.  Overall, it was above average. The "Pasta Carbonera" was al dente with a relatively light creamy sauce, if you like your pasta with a heavy and cheesy sauce, this is not it.  The soft boiled egg was creamy and smooth but lacked that flavor.  Overall, not bad, another above average offering. The coffee was pretty good, it was served as an expresso with a jar of hot water, you can mix it to your own taste.  The "Almond Green Tea Latte" was refreshing and yummy, small hint of almond with lightly infused green tea into the latte.  We thought the Latte was very good, definately recommend.Need to getaway to a place that is not so crowded, give this place a try. Very comfortable considering all the crowded restaurants in Hong Kong, clean and spacious with friendly service, it's even ideal for large group gatherings.…Read More

OK, bou not worth the Hype
添好運點心專門店
2014-05-20
I guessed this once bustling restaurant chain was better when it had only 2 or 3 outlets.  Now, they have expanded all over Hong Kong, inevitably the food quality will suffer.  The food was definately better in the early days, I guess they used to manage their quality control a lot better than it is now. Here goes, the Pan-Fried Raddish Cakes was kind of oily and lacked any flavor, just kind of starchy.  The Steamed Chicken was good on average, at least it was not oversteamed like other places, and it actually tasted like chicken.  The Steamed Chicken Buns bordered on bad, as you peel away the rice paper on the bottom, pretty much the meat fell off because the bottom was kind of soggy.  Finally, I'll place the Steamed Pork Ribs and Steamed Pork Ribs & Chicken Feet together because it was the same food materials used.  Not sure where they get their Pork Ribs (it's obvious it is machine cuts), there were some average bite sizes and than there were those pieces of pork that was cut so small, I'm talking really small, oh well, not tasty even.Overall, used to be good, perhaps the original shops are still all right, but this one in Tseung Kwan O is definately a miss.  The place is kind of unkept, like greasy table and stained cups and bowls.  The worse thing, the service is worse than your typical fast food outlets, the manager don't even care.  Go with low expectations and you will not be disappointed, I guess.…Read More

Third Time Lucky
Le Bonbon de Paris
2014-05-20
Wow, we frequent Sai Kung quite a bit and ever since Le Bonbon opened we've been trying to have lunch there.  On previous visits, we did not want to wait as there were generally quite a line.  However, on our third try this Sunday we were lucky enough to snap a table right away, maybe it was the humid weather that Le Bonbon was less busy. The place is tiny, seats about 15-20 max, and it's mostly outdoor seating, definately not comfortable, but heck we came here for the food anyway, and this time we were not to be denied. Here go, we order everthing all at once because we were hungry, so the food and drinks arrived in no particular order.  Great that the Coffee and Raspberries Shake came first.  The Coffee was all right, really wanted to sample the Shake first, we were hot and thirsty.  Yum..... the Shake was cool and smooth with a lot of Raspberries flavor, sweet and delicious.Ah, next came the pastas, first, the Beetroot Pasta with Creamy Chicken.  The Beetroot Pasta lacked the sweet Beetroot flavor and was somewhat on the soft side, we prefer al dente, and the Creamy Chicken sauce would have been average if not for the Sun-Dried Tomatoes added which was very tasty.  The Gnocchi arrived next and it looked average, but once you mix all the ingredients (Bacon & Cherry Tomatoes) that was buried on the bottom, ah.... the flavor arises.  Long time since we had Gnocchi, this version was very pleasing and very flling due to the heavy cream sauce.Overall, just a really nice place to sit down and have a quick bite.  Definately come back and try their other shake flavors.  However, we are somewhat confused as to why the restaurant is called "Le Bonbon de Paris", almost everthing on the menu leaned toward Italian more, so what, as long as the food is good and service with a smile.…Read More

Afternoon Coffee Break
Veygo Coffee
2014-05-17
OK, just needed a place to take a coffee break, found ourselves somewhere in Sheung Wan, a tiny coffee shop caught our eyes, so why not.We ordered the typical Americano Coffee, not bad and not great, very similar to any of the various coffee shops all over HK.  Than the "Malt Brulee Latte" caught our attention, ummmm, what would a latte (without coffee) taste like if the topping were to resemble a Creme Brulee, sounded interesting. The "Malt Brulee Latte" topping was pretty good once it cooled off (as recommended), it did remind us of the topping one would find on a Creme Brulee.  The topping was good, however, most of the sugar dissolved into the latte and it was definately on the sweet side.  Interesting if you have a sweet tooth. Will I give Veygo another try, why not?  As we just finished lunch, we did not sample their food offerings.  The food looked pretty good on the table next to us, I guess it must of being pretty good since the patrons next to us completely finished it all, and the potions looked pretty decent, so I think I will give the food a try next time.  Oh yeah, of course the service was not of the 5-stars hotel variety, I just want to point out that they were very friendly and efficient, just made one very comfortable and relaxed.  Service with a smile …Read More

Relaxing Lunch
The News Room Diner
2014-05-17
OK, the weather is bad, just want a place with good air conditioning to a have a relaxing lunch.  Previously had drinks outdoor, now finally giving it a try for lunch. We did not have any particular expectations since it was our first lunch visit.  Some items on the menu looked interesting, such as the French Rabbit, however, thought this was too complex for a Saturday lunch.  We settled on the following:First, wanted to give the "Louisiana Chili Crab Cakes" a go.  A bit on the small side, but the taste more than made up for it.  Quite a bit of chunky crab meats inside a moist and nicely pan fried patties.  Surprisingly it was not at all spicy, don't let the "Chili" in the name fool you, but the meaty crabs was quite tasty. The "Warm Mushroom & Baby Asparagus Salad" was nicely done.  The large grilled Potabello mushroom was nicely grilled, the Asparagus was sweet and tender, but the dressing used was the highlight, it was refreshingly light and tangy.  The dressing blended very well with all the veggies. Finally, ordered the "Duck Confit Tagliatelle", the pasta was al dente but a bit on the bland side.  The Duck Confit was shereded and mixed in with the pasta, top with ripe cherry tomatoes (nicely peeled).  When it arrived, it didn't look too apealing at first sight, however once we dug in, it was all right, not great and not bad, just not too much too talk about.Since it was Saturday, had time, decided to had out to another place for dessert and coffee.…Read More

DALLOYAU
2014-05-13
First on the list, the “Delice Du Chef”, consists of Almond Genoise, Raspberry Compote, Supreme Vanilla Mousse, and fresh Raspberries. It looked delicious at first sight, however, the red and pick outer layer of sponge cake was on somewhat of the dry side, although it tasted good and not too sweet. The highlight to the “Delice Du Chef” was the very smooth and delicate Vanilla Mousse, as well as the crunchy Almond Genoise. Finally, since the “fresh” Raspberries were glazed, they were beginning to wilt a little bit but at least it was still sweet. Overall, paying a little bit more attention to the Raspberries’ freshness and the cakes moistness would have been perfect.Next, the “Saint-Honore Chantilly”, with Caramelized Choux Pastry on Sweet Dough stuffed with Vanilla Chantilly, than topped off with Chiboust Cream. The Sweet Dough was delicious, a bit on the sweet side but needed to add the crunchiness when one bite into it. The Chiboust Cream was light and fluffy, just right to complement the crunchy dough. Looked simple but very satisfying, goes great with a good cup of coffee.Next up, the namesake “Dalloyau”, made with Almond Meringue, Praline Cream, and Crushed Caramelized Hazelnut. The Crushed Caramelized Hazelnut was sweet and delectable, almost wanted to lick the plate clean of its bits (sit Scooby sit), the Almond Meringue and Praline was just perfect accompaniment to the Crushed Caramelized Hazelnut. Overall, this was simply delicious. Here’s the “Tartelette Au Citron”, with Sweet Dough, Lemon Curd, and Confit Lemon Zest. Looked simple enough, however, the Lemon Curd is one of the more challenging aspect to this dessert, it had to have the right combination of sweetness as well as little bit of sourness mix in with some tartness. Ah, the Chef mastered the Lemon Curd with just the right combination, the Sweet Dough Tart was perfect, one can eat this without utensils because it was so good as well as easy to pick up, but again to be civilized utensils are recommended. Finally, the one everyone is talking about, the “Opera” made with Coffee Jonconde Sponge, Coffee Cream, 70% Chocolate Ganache, and Chocolate Glaze. Saved this one for last because so many people are talking about it, well actually it went down first, just reviewing it last. The Coffee Jonconde Sponge was moist and delicious, the combination was just perfect. Had different variations of the “Opera” elsewhere, must admit this one was my favorite. Don’t know how to describe it, I’m sure other chocoholics and coffee lovers out there know what I mean.…Read More
