Intriguing concept: Cheese omakase
ROUCOU Cheese Bar & Omakase
2025-04-23
Reservation was made a month in advance during their soft opening. Initially, from the first Openrice review, it seemed they weren't quite ready to serve omakase yet. However, being cheese lovers, we decided to give their regular menu a try. To our delight, we stumbled upon their 3rd day of offering omakase! It was a stroke of luck! We absolutely adored it! This was, hands down, one of the most intriguing and enlightening dining experiences we've had.The dining room was plush and inviting, with an abundance of cheese ready to be severed. The omakase dining area, situated at the back, was a cozy private space that accommodated 8 guests around the chef. Similar to the Japanese omakase setup, allowing us to witness the chef craft each dish while educating us about cheeses throughout the evening.Chef Jeremy shared his preference for working with smaller vineyards rather than commercial ones, started our night with a delightful glass of Champagne. There wasn't a fixed wine pairing menu, he believes in wine-at-your-own-pace and he would happily recommend wines that complemented the current courses whenever we were ready for another glass. The night's menu was handwritten on coasters, adding a charming touch to the experience. I'll spare you the intricate details of each dish as I believe they're best enjoyed with a fresh mind, with the chef's insights on ingredient selection and flavor combinations. Besides, I'm certain the menu is ever-evolving, promising new surprises! Nonetheless, here are some of the highlights of the evening:Armed with a glass of dessert wine, we were asked to select our favorite dish. Remarkably, each member of our party of 5 chose a different dish! It was delighting how every course was a superb, including the simplest sourdough and fresh butter, which managed to wow us. The thoughtfulness in the sequence of dishes served ensuring a balanced progression was evident. You could feel the dedication and creativity poured into the menu design, reflecting the chef's passion for the concept.A truly impressive dining experience with Chef Jeremy, we are already making plans to come back! …查看更多

Very reasonable priced Omakase in CWB
鮨政x大湖
2023-07-28
Just out of the way of the busy heart of CWB, SUSHIMASA is located in fashion walk. You can’t miss the bright sign above the contrasting zen wooden Japanese sliding door. There are 3 different omakase menu for dinner, $298, $498, and $698. These are all VERY cheap for omakase in Hong Kong, but we decided to go for the middle option to get a feel for it.We started with 3 cooked dishes: Chawanmushi with ikura, deep fried squid cake, and abalone with abalone pate. To be frank, the food were not very memorable, they are stand, but nothing stands out. However, the staff were doing their job admirably, introducing every dish as they were served.Next we had a tuna sashimi, and a Japanese oyster with yuzu jelly, that was refreshing!Sushi was up next, and this mid-priced menu comes with 6 pieces. The last sushi was their signature, it came with shaved frozen foie gras snowing right in front of you. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by how creamy this was! I wanted more! One of the major difference between the higher priced menu was this course. For the $698 dinner, you get a “uni hotdog”, which was served with a generous amount of uni wrapped with seaweed. It looked quite epic! For us, we got a mini uni minced toro don.The menu ends with a hot fish soup and a dessert (not pictured). All in all, I think Sushimasa is a good starting place for people who would like to try omakase for the first time. I didn’t mind it since it was just a random dinner on Thursday, and I was able to book relatively last minute. However, if you are seasoned omakase go-er, or if you are looking for something more traditional, or something of higher quality, this place would not be my first choice. …查看更多

Worth the hype! Absolutely loved it!
Eggslut
2023-07-28
I am late to the party but better late than never! This American breakfast sandwich chain has been on my list ever since they put that gigantic renovation billboard up! I must say it was worth the wait! The first time I went was just a couple weeks after they opened the doors, unfortunately the line was literally out the door, and I am just not a huge fan of lining up… and that leads us to now! This was a takeaway order, we got 2 sandwiches, the bacon egg and cheese sandwich, and the Fairfax sandwich. One of the major thing I noticed was how warm and still toasted the bread was, even on a takeaway order! I hate soggy bread, so this is huge for me! Big thumbs up Secondly, it was the unbeatable buttery smell and taste from the sandwich! Ahh so good! The egg was fluffy, runny, creamy and buttery on the Fairfax sandwich, it was full of bold flavors! The sunny side up egg in the bacon egg and cheese sandwich was perfectly made too, runny yolk but it would not run off the sandwich! Bacon was thick cut, smoky, and just delicious! Their orange juice is worth a mention as well, I was not expecting a fresh orange juice to be quite that big, we ordered a small size but it came out to be a good 16oz fresh OJ (unlike the fist-size OJ from you-know-where).I cannot wait to come back and try their infamous slut and perhaps even dine-in in the future when they are not as busy!…查看更多

Lots of room for improvement
MOOJOO Lifestyle Cafe
2023-07-28
Located right off of one of the entrances to the brand new mall in Taiwai, with warm wooden themed decor and very open cafe style. It’s quite cozy and welcoming at first glance. I’ll be honest, MooJoo was not my first choice, but since everywhere else had a 40 table line and I had a movie to rush to, I decided to give this place a try.The first warning sign was the fact that this restaurant was empty in comparison to others, at 8pm. To be fair to them, the staff did warn us most of their food were sold out, and asked us to check their ordering app to see if we would like any of the options left. That was fair, and we decided to give it a try anyways! The food options were seriously limited, which we were warned about. We had the smoked salmon and avocado sourdough with arugula, $108. This one is normal and decent. The bread was not toasted though, and there was a good amount of sour cream hidden underneath the salmon, which was not on the menu… unfortunately my friend hates sour cream so it took a while to remove them ourselves.I ordered the Sichuan style popcorn chicken with chili mayo sauce, $78. This was, to put it lightly, disappointing. Chicken came out piping hot, which I normally would have loved. However, it was dry due to being overcooked, completely tasteless except for a strong frying oil taste… the sauce was weird, it was not spicy and did not have much of a flavor to it... it tasted like a diluted sriracha but somehow maintained a thick texture without the richness… The vibe was… interesting… one could say they are friendly and carefree (by the way dogs at the cafe are allowed), while it can also be interpreted as unprofessional or passive aggressive. Throughout the meal, we learnt from loud conversations between the staff that they were rushing to close shop to rush to their own dinner plans, but they never said anything or rushed any of the customers, which was good. One of them had screamed (quietly) a couple times because she hurt herself during work. She was not loud, we were just sitting close by and were a little startled.. All in all the staff were extremely polite when interacting with customers.I would be interested to try some of their unavailable food items in the future, but in the meantime, there are lots to be improved.…查看更多

Personal seafood pot
船渦
2020-04-02
With the current situation, personal hotpot seems to be a good choice XDThe setup is interesting, they have a huge center table and curtains between seats/stoves were lowered to separate each party. We had a relatively big group, so it was unavoidable that one of us had to sit facing a large pillar in the middle of the restaurant…Lots of fish tanks inside so you can see the freshness of what’s coming your way.Sauce area provides the basics like soya sauce, minced garlic and chopped chilies for additional flavors. There are lots to choose from on the menu, I went for a la carte selection of shellfish galore.I have one word for my dinner: FRESHThere are recommended cooking times for different types of seafood printed on the table for reference, which is helpful for those of us who do not often cook seafood! I cooked everything with an additional minute, and they turned out great. The texture of everything is tender if you cook it according to the recommended time. Even with an additional minute, they were not overly chewy. They just tasted fresh! There was not a hint of fishy smell or taste to them. Occasionally there would be sand in the clams, but I think that is probably unavoidable with fresh seafood. Some of the smaller clams were still a bit salty, with the flavor of sea water! Fresh-from-the-sea indeed. There was no seasoning on any of the seafood, just the very basic freshness and seawater made it great. The crab was the best of the bunch. It had plenty of crabmeat, juicy and flaky meats with that signature fresh steamed crab taste. The meat was very fresh and has that sweet taste and there was lots of fresh crab paste too. Well worth the trouble to dig out all that meat XDWatch out for the abalone. When one of my friend tried to eat it, some part of it busted and a bad smell (like soiled trash) came out of it. We spoke to the staff and she told us “if you broke that sac underneath the abalone, you cannot eat it” she was nice about it and switched it out for us. I would recommend a note for the customers to prevent this from happening. After steaming seafood, either hotpot soup or congee would be prepared for you. The congee was not as “seafood flavored” as other places we have been to. Nonetheless it was a sweet, flavorful pumpkin & taro puree congee with a light seafood flavor as the base.It was a nice dinner overall. I would come back for the freshness of the seafood.…查看更多

Good burger with a view
SHAKE SHACK (國際金融中心商場)
2020-03-24
Shake shack or Five Guys? The burger debate of the year.I personally like shake shack’s burger more. Here is my classic double ShackBurger.  The view here is a sure win too. Where else do you get a reasonably priced, high quality burger with the view of the entire Victoria Harbour? The beef patties taste juicier, and gives an overall better beef flavor to the burger. The cheese flavor is a little stronger with less of just a dairy flavor. The double SmokeShack is really nice too. The burger comes with a generous amount of Applewood smoked bacon. That smoky bacon flavor stands out, but at the same time, goes so well with the juicy beef patties in the burger. The burgers are smaller in size compared with other major burger places, which makes it easier to eat without making a mess. I think their burger is just overall slightly better than their competitor in my opinion. The cheese fries are simple with gooey cheese on top. Even when it has cooled down, the nice cheese flavor still compensated for the fact that the cheese is coagulated on the fries. These are some good cheese fries, but with that said, it is not as flavorful as their competitor’s Cajun fries. I really liked Shake Shack’s burgers! I will definitely keep coming back.…查看更多

Huge portions, good steaks at reasonable price
後街牛扒
2020-03-24
A friend recommended this hidden little place for a long-overdue lunch gathering. We made a reservation and luckily we did because this place was actually full soon after we got here! As soon as we sat down, we were given an envelope each to put our masks in (this was during the coronavirus period!), which was very thoughtful of them! After the envelope, the staff came back with a handheld UV disinfecting device to disinfect our silverwares by hovering and moving slowly over them. This was a very nice gesture when everyone was hyper-conscientious about cleanliness. The atmosphere here is quite chill, the walls are lined with empty wine bottles, I like this recycled deco theme, turning waste into useful carefree decorations.Of course the most important part: Food! The set lunch comes with so much food, first is the pumpkin soup and the salad:The soup is quite thick but not very creamy, naturally sweet with lots of pumpkin in it, a very good start! Salad greens was fresh and tossed with a vinaigrette dressing, the fig on top was coated with a layer of sweet glaze and it was very soft. Then comes this appetizer trio! Toast with guacamole, fried kale, and marinated steak with tortilla chips. Guacamole was on the lighter side but still yummy. Fried kale was good! It was like seasoned chips but healthy (?)! The marinated steak was ok, I couldn’t really pin point what it tasted like… but it tastes fermented. They have many different steak cuts to choose from such as prime ribeye, roast beef etc. They also controlled their temperature well! We asked for medium and that is exactly what we got! The texture of the meat is moist and tender. Very well made! This chicken steak with devil’s cheese sauce on top was HUGE. The cheese is mixed with ground beef, so it was not just a boring cheese sauce. The sauce itself was nothing special and tasted like those movie theater’s nachos cheese sauce, but the chicken steak itself was juicy and delicious! This one is a chicken roll with porcini sauce, wrapped up with kale inside, the mushroom sauce was good, a good balance of carb, protein and vegetable XDCrab meat linguine, very saucy which I like! Creamy and not too salty, the sauce tastes like a standard white sauce, with crab meat added. Linguine is al dente, but I usually prefer my noodles on the softer side.Drinks are huge too, you can sit here and chill for a while and catch up with friends. For $35 their lemon teas have unlimited refills! They also use biodegradable straws, makes me feel good about not killing turtles!…查看更多

Consistent Japanese curry
CoCo壹番屋 (新港中心)
2020-03-24
Coco Ichibaya has always been one of my go to place for Japanese curry. Very simple design on both the restaurant and the menu but with LOTS of options! And if you just can’t find the right mix and match that you like, you can always design your curry rice with different meatand vegetable toppings if you want! We got some chicken nuggets and fries to start. They were hot and crispy when served, which is very important to me! Fried food that are served hot and crispy is always a good sign! The fries are not dry inside as well, moist and full of potato flavor! Nuggets were okay, it tasted just like the store bought frozen ones you can bake at home, but then again, it was served steaming hot and crispy, which makes everything better! This time I got the curry soup udon.I was craving soup curry so I figured I would try this. The curry soup is not as strongly flavored as their curry sauce, but it still has that same Japanese curry taste! Perfect for a lighter version of a meal. I only wish I can choose the spicy level on this too, but the option is not available for soup curry udon. The udon texture is chewy, more on the harder side. The pork cutlet was crispy when it was served, but very soon got soggy in the soup. I would suggest serving it on the side on a plate to keep it crispy. It was still good though, as it was quite a thick cut, and the meat was tender. I still liked it.We also tried the baked curry rice for the first time, however I do not recommend this one. The rice was quite dry and there was barely any curry sauce in it… we ordered the smallest amount of rice, but it still was not close to having enough sauce… curry flavor was not enough, almost like a dry fried rice with a little curry powder. This was the only disappointing dish I have ever had in Coco Ichibanya. I do not think I will get this again, but I will still be back for their normal curry rice with plenty of sauce.…查看更多

Croissants that are worth the hype
當文歷餅店 by Dominique Ansel
2020-02-26
Walked by this infamous bakery by Chef Dominique Ansel so of course I had to grab one!Their bright orange logo is very eye catching, along with glass countertops, white walls and gold pillars, they just wake you up! I was very lucky to find it without a huge line, however, it still took a bit of time. There are multiple employees there, but they also have to prepare food/ coffee and serve the dine-in customers. There was only 1 person helping the takeaway queue, so it took longer than expected, but no big deal. The shop does not have a very strong bakery scent, probably because it is inside a mall. Don’t let that fool you though; their croissants are as amazing as the hype. Chocolate croissant- Golden and crispy on the outside, fluffy, airy with good amount of chocolate inside! Ham and cheese croissant- This might be my favorite breakfast item and I could have it every day! The cheese on top smells so good when you eat it. The same crispy, flaky, airy texture with savory ham and cheese rolled together inside. Loved it!Good croissants are difficult to find, no doubt I will come back. I saw they have another line of super cute desserts that are made in the shape of HK’s famous local foods. They will be my target to try out next time I pass by this wonderful bakery!…查看更多

Nice pasta and friendly service
Pici
2020-02-13
Pici is well known for their homemade pastas in HK. I was quite excited to try them! We came in the early evening, started with a glass of wine overlooking the (not so busy) street! Reminds me of those cafes in Paris (or anywhere else in Europe? )Staff here are very friendly, they greeted us with a big smile, asked how your day was, introduced the menu and their wines. Maybe it was still early and not many people were there, they were very nice to us.Vitello tonnato- This looked and tasted lot like the one at Pirata, but seeing that they belong to the same restaurant group, it might just be the same recipe!Truffle tagliolini at the back, pasta was firmer in texture than average, which is apparently what al dente is supposed to be like. Most homemade pastas I have tried are firmer than my liking, but that’s okay. The flavor was good, truffle sauce was strong and there was a generous serving on top!Ravioli- This one was so full of flavor I loved it. It was on the saltier side but I liked it. The cheese, the sauce, and the stuffing go very well together. I didn’t take a picture of the desserts, we got one each, a tiramisu and a panna cotta. Honestly, we were so stuffed by this time we didn’t really need dessert. They were good though! I have always loved tiramisu and they do it pretty well too! I like this place~ definitely a nice place to chill with a wine and good homemade pasta.…查看更多

It used to be better…
BLT Burger
2020-02-13
I have not been back to BTL for a couple of years. We were walking around the area and decided we want burgers, so here we are. With the current epidemic situation, there were hardly any people around. That gave me a unique opportunity to snap a photo of their neat diner style deco. I love those silver edged tables! The staff were very friendly, and also gave us lots of attention. When we needed anything, we got it in a minute.Oreo milkshake! This one is very thick, so thick I had to wait to get it up the straw! It was quite yummy but also quite sweet, which is expected of a milkshake. Cheesy waffle fries- These were good! They were served hot, which is very important to me! Generous amount of melted cheese on top AND below the fries! Finger licking good.I got this pulled pork nachos, it was a bit disappointing. The chips were a bit stale, and the pulled pork has a lot of sauce which made the chips soggy. The flavor of the pull pork was a bit off too, it was not the Tex-Mex/ Chipotle pull pork style flavor.. Maybe it just wasn’t what I was expected, but I don’t think the flavors went well together. On the other hand, my friends loved their Mexican “El Chapo” burger. They said it was juicy and well made!Maybe I should have just ordered a burger… …查看更多

Chill sports bar with good food
Inn Side Out
2020-02-12
Located on the second floor of the South China Athletic Association (SCAA), this sports bar type restaurant is just above the driving range. Golf balls fly underneath you as you dine! Note: since this restaurant is inside the SCAA building so membership is required. Innside out offers a dinning coupon for when you apply for the SCAA membership, so you do recoup your membership fee back! One good thing about being located inside SCAA is that it’s a little out of the way so you never had to wait for a table here! The atmosphere is quite chill, and so is their service. Servers here will drop off their large menu, a cup of free peanuts, and leave you be until you signal at them that you are ready. There is always someone nearby ready to take your order! Small and large group of friends will gather for a beer and unwind after work. I love the large outdoor dining section when the weather is nice. Great place to chill!Let’s start with my favorite dish here! Their mac and cheese is something I keep coming back for, generous amount of sauce and super cheesy. There is a very nice smoky pancetta taste to the sauce. Yum!The quesadilla is another dish that’s consistently good here. Hot and melty cheese with tender chicken meat, perfect with sour cream and guacamole on the side!…查看更多

It’s finally here!
鼎王麻辣鍋 (金巴利道)
2020-02-12
A couple years ago my friend and I planned a trip to Taipei just because we wanted Ding Wang, that’s how much I love this place. When I heard that they are opening in HK I jumped out of my chair! And here I am (finally). The 2 hostesses at the door greet all customers with a bow, just like in Taiwan. That simultaneously made me feel super welcomed and super awkward. All their servers do this bow before they leave your table too! Again, I feel super respected, and super awkward. I felt like I should bow back! The soup base with duck blood and tofu, OMG, it’s exactly how it tasted like in Taiwan. I was so happy with it. My favorite is really 100% here in Hong Kong, and the quality was not compromised! Duck blood- silky smooth and full of flavor, my absolute favorite.Tofu- Texture is firmer than regular tofu, but not as hard as the firm tofu from supermarkets. It is still soft, but will not disintegrate in the soup. Of course they are full of flavor as well. These are perfect! Wagyu beef balls- These are actually surprising really good, but pricey. Even after cooking in a strong flavored soup, you can still taste the meat of good quality beef and you can feel they did really use wagyu beef in the texture. My friend introduced me to these glass noodles. They are really good with Mala (numb and spicy) soup base! Even veggies are super fresh. Oh I love this place.…查看更多

My favorite cart noodles in Hong Kong
文記車仔麵 (福榮街)
2020-02-11
I have always liked the idea of cart noodles because I like to pick and choose what components I want to make up my meal. I like how Man Kee goes one step further in providing this flexibility, they let me choose the soup base as well! A bowl of noodles here is highly customizable since you get to choose EVERY flavor! From the toppings, the noodle type, spicy level, and the soup base! You can further customize it with the army of condiments available on the table! How can I not love it? It is practically custom made to exactly how I like it!Here shows a few of my favorite toppings: sweet soy sauce-flavored chicken wings (aka Swiss sauce wings), chive dumplings, pig’s blood, turnip, squid balls, and small pork intestines! This bowl has the “oil noodle” as the noodle base (my favorite choice for cart noodles and cart noodles only XD), beef brisket soup, medium spicy, and I have added a little of Mala chilly oil. I can eat this all day! This is one of my favorite cart noodle places in Hong Kong. There is almost always a line for it at mealtimes, so I usually come at off-peak times to avoid the wait.…查看更多

Brunch anyone?
Oolaa (必列者士街)
2020-02-03
Oolaa is quite a hike to get to unless you drive or cab there, but the area is quite nice for a relaxing weekend to hangout with friends and family. I would say Oolaa is a family style restaurant and they are kids friendly, so if you want to grab a long lunch and catch up with friends with kids, it will work well. On the other hand, if you want a quieter brunch place, this is not for you. The restaurant is quite large, also good for large parties and they have a very nice patio area that’s semi outdoor. Service can be a bit slow here. It does not bother me too much on weekend brunches because I’m here to relax and just chilling with friends. They make some good coffees here, small sized but good quality.I particularly liked their eggs benedict! I like the way their hollandaise sauce taste, it is not just creamy but it is also a little tangy. Poached eggs were perfectly cooked, soft with a runny yolk, which drips onto the English muffin when you cut it open!My friend said she liked the wrap too (I am not sure if this was a breakfast burrito or some custom wrap…) but she said she liked it XDI always recommend Oolaa for a good place to brunch on the weekend since it has decent food and good coffee. …查看更多
