Please DO NOT go to Ye Shanghai in Pacific Place. It is the worst restaurant in HK with the worst service ever. The wait staff are rude and vindictive to say the least. Today my group of friends and I arranged to have nice gathering before 2 of them gave birth, which could happen at any time now. We also had a 2 year old toddler with us.

My heavily pregnant friend had made a booking for 7 adults and 1 child earlier in the week for 1pm today, but unfortunately when we turned up at the restaurant early (by 12:50pm), the receptionist said that they had cancelled our booking!! Reason? Well, they claimed that they had called my friend many times to confirm the booking, but when my friend checked her phone, she only had 1 missed call at 9 something last night, which was apparently from the restaurant. They did not leave a voicemail. As she was heavily pregnant and slightly ill, she had already gone to bed by then.

After waiting till 1:15pm, we finally got a table. The wait staff took us inside the restaurant and pointed randomly to an empty space and said that was our table. As there were 2 tables in the vicinity, we asked which table was ours. The wait staff looked at each other and just ignored us as they said they didn't know. Naturally we then went to the table on the side with more space, given we had 2 heavily pregnant ladies and a toddler.

When we got settled at the table, the receptionist came back and told us that was not our table, and tried to force us to go back to the other one. They said that the other group had 8 people, so we had to have the other tighter table. We argued for a while because we ALSO booked for 8 people!! Our pregnant friend was in tears by this time given the treatment of the terrible wait staff. Ultimately, the other group (adults only) were very gracious and allowed us to keep the table.

We then tried to get over what had happened and enjoy our lunch on this beautiful day. Unfortunately, the food was very average taste / quality-wise and ridiculously priced for what we were given. In particular, we ordered a bowl of noodles (蔥油撈面) which looked like a tiny bowl of leftovers and it cost HKD65 (see photo)!! We also had to wait a long time for desserts.

Unbeknownst to us, the worst was yet to come. When we asked to pay, we were given the bill. However, a wait staff quickly came after the bill was handed to us and snatched it out of my friend's hands and said they had forgotten something. When I compared what had been changed, I noticed that whilst they had initially charged us for 6 person's sauce fees, they subsequently changed that to 8 persons!! This was despite the fact that because one friend could not make it last minute so we ended up with 7 people only, and the wait staff had actually came after the first bill was issued and counted the number of people at the table!! The cost per person was about HKD20 only.

When I called back one of the wait staff to reflect on this, I was informed that because we had booked for 8 people, we needed to pay for 8 people's sauce fees!!! This is ridiculous and just unheard of!! I asked to see the terms and conditions, and also whether this new term had been specified in writing in the menu or at the time of booking. The wait staff then just said "ok ok", and took back the bill to reissue the same. They changed it to 7 persons, insisting on charging for our 2 year old whereas at other restaurants the baby would have been free.

Seriously, I was ready to call the police had they not changed the billing! I would definitely have contacted Customs and Excise to complain. This was a clear breach of the Trade Descriptions Ordinance! It was truly awful that these terrible wait staff would bully our group like this.

Dear friends, please can I urge you all not to go to Ye Shanghai and allow them to continue with this terrible treatment of customers.
