After a long day of shopping or sightseeing, a Hong Kong favourite is to sit down and enjoy afternoon tea. Many places offer such services and it can be difficult to choose, unless you've done prior research. To help you with that decision, today I'll be reviewing my experience at the Lobby Lounge of the Conrad in Admiralty. For weekdays, afternoon tea is served between 3-5:30pm for HK$188 per person (~ US$24 / £16 / €20). For weekends, an afternoon tea buffet is available for HK$228 per person (
For weekdays, afternoon tea is served between 3-5:30pm for HK$188 per person (~ US$24 / £16 / €20). For weekends, an afternoon tea buffet is available for HK$228 per person (~ US$29 / £19 / €24), also between 3-5:30pm.
As for the tea itself, my family and I ordered both the Western and Asian menu (left and right in the first photo). While there was a clear difference between the two in terms of desserts, the starters were virtually the same and there were minor differences between the two "mains" (in my opinion). So unless you have a specific preference for desserts, then I'd say it doesn't really matter which set you order (if you can't decide which menu provides the better selection of food/value for money)!
My two clear favourites, however, was the smoked salmon sandwich (in both sets) and the quiche (of the Western menu). Smoked salmon is conventionally served in a bagel with cream cheese; but the sandwich here was different in that the salmon and cheese were layered between pieces of white bread, topped with some herbs and peppercorns on top. I thought the flavours combined were very interesting - especially as the herbs/peppercorn added a nice "kick" to it.
I also thought that the waitresses were very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was really comfortable too (partly because being a week day, service is quieter than usual, meaning less people hoavering around). While I understand that not everyone can make it on a weekday, there is the benefit of having the lounge to yourself or just a couple of other people if you can make it, Monday to Friday. Compared to my experience at the Lobby Lounge of Island Shangri-La a few weekends before, it's nice not to be able to hear other people's conversations (mixed in with live band music)!
However, having said that, I still feel that overall the tea set was just average. In my opinion, each "piece" lacked the same quality, making it lack consistency. Some were better than others, while others were nothing to write home about. Overall, the food wasn't bad, but just not terribly exciting or worth a special trip.
Have you tried the afternoon tea at the Lobby Lounge? If not, where do you recommend going? Let me know in the comments!
Thanks for reading. Happy Wednesday!
