Boyfriend was at the weekend toy market when he found out that there was a ramen restaurant called 大叔拉面 (English name: Ojisan Ramen) that was offering a free snack if something was bought at the market. Ojisan Ramen is named after the Ojisan toy from the toy company that runs this restaurant. The outside looked just like a Japanese ramen restaurant entrance.
Inside it looked like a traditional Japanese ramen restaurant. There are bar tables on one side and regular tables on the other.
The walls are lined with various vintage toys along with Ojisan himself scattered and hidden throughout.
They also sell the Ojisan themed dinnerware as well.
Menu is in Chinese only. There is no English. You order by scanning the QR code menu which is also in Chinese only. There is no English. But basically they serve two ramen broths: chicken and wagyu beef. The toppings are the same: chicken, pork or a combination of both as well as spicy options. They also offer snacks and drinks.
They had a opening special of wagyu beef ramen in wagyu beef soup where if you order one, the second one is half price. But it was our first time here so we opted to try both soup bases.
This is the Iberico Pork charshu in wagyu beef broth ($98). It came with an egg and jews ear. It also comes with bamboo shoots but boyfriend didn't want any. But I had the bamboo shoots and normally I don't talk much about them but they were actually very good. A bit more on the sweet side.
The wagyu beef broth was really good. We both agreed it was better than the chicken one. Very rich in flavour and not too heavy.
The charshu was exceptional. Very moist and tender, there was a glaze of sweet sauce on top. Seared well so there was a bit of char to it. A good portion of fat to meat without being too much.
The noodles were the thin kind and were chewy and smooth. No after taste.
The egg was excellent. A nice flavour to it and the yolk was soft and runny.
This is the slow cooked chicken charshu in a chicken broth ($80).
The soup here was a bit more creamy and tasted fine but we've had better chicken soup based ramen elsewhere so it wasn't as good as those other ones. It was rich but we've had better so we're a bit biased.
The chicken charshu was slow cooked so it was literally melt in your mouth.
As boyfriend bought a toy at the weekend toy market, they had an offer for a free snack if we showed them proof. We were expecting plain gyoza or something but out came two deep fried oysters. Completely unexpected and it wasn't on the menu as well. Crispy though a bit cold but it was free so we didn't complain. There was a side of salad tht was dressed as well. Nice for a freebie.
As it was new, they let customers draw for a pin of Ojisan. So, a little gift as we left.
The food was better than expected as we had low expectations thinking it was a gimmick from the toy company. But it honestly was good. The restaurant decoration kept in theme with an old ramen style restaurant. Service was friendly. I'd be back.
