On Friday night my friend and I decided to “have a chill Friday night” (not my words lol) so we got away from the city and looked for something to eat in the Shatin area. Since apparently parking is super easy to find in Tai Wai we settled on this restaurant which had high ratings on Openrice. It was past 8:30 when we arrived but there were still quite a lot of people lining up to get in. Since the place is fairly small we had to wait for almost 20 minutes to get a table. We both ordered set meals
It was past 8:30 when we arrived but there were still quite a lot of people lining up to get in. Since the place is fairly small we had to wait for almost 20 minutes to get a table.
-The daikon was lightly marinated so it didn’t taste too heavy. Perfect for an appetizer!
-The first main was sukiyaki beef served over kanten noodles
-The sauce was also light and not too salty. It had a very ‘home cooking’ feel to me
-I love the additional of the kanten noodles which made the dish less boring
The other main was one of their specialities, Chicken Karaage
-The chicken instead was super juicy and tender. Yummy!
We (I) couldn’t resist ordering dessert since everything looked so good One of their other specialty is waffles so we ordered a Poached Pear & Lychee Waffle
-I wish they gave us more toppings though. The pear didn’t feel poached and was more like candied pear. If they had given us more more there would have been a stronger pear taste. Instead, it was a mixture of half raisins half pear which I didn’t really enjoy – who likes raisins anyway??
-Also, there were only like 2 pieces of lychee and I didn’t even realize it was missing because I completely forgot about it.
-The soufflé had good texture – chewy top and a moist inside. It wasn’t too sweet and also tasted eggy which I really appreciate
-I think they added a bit too much lavender stalk on the top for decoration. They were tough and when it got mixed into the soufflé I had to pick/spit them out which made it more difficult to eat
-I only had a bite of the vanilla ice cream but it was really good. A bit richer and creamier than the regular one.
The total for the 2 of us was around $250 which isn’t bad for dinner and dessert!
I really like this place – inexpensive, good food and has a comfortable ambience. It is too crowded though and I don’t think it’s a good place where you can sit and chat with your friends when there’s so many people waiting outside. I might visit again on an afternoon when it might be less busy.
