The Steak Fries and with Bolognaise and Thick Cheese Sauce ($38) is one of the tes set selections. I thought the fries were freshly fried as it took over twenty minutes to arrive. However, the so-call “steak” fries were just normal thick fries and were lukewarm in temperature. There was no seasoning or any potato taste, and you can probably find better quality fries in the frozen section of any supermarket. Worse were the two sauces placed in small ramekins: the cheese sauce was watery, bland, and it was a cream sauce much like (or worse than) the Japanese prepackaged instant white sauce for topping spaghetti. The Bolognaise sauce resembled Hong Kong styled meat sauce but with meat minced too fine to retain any texture. Wait, did I mention that the sauces were both cold? The dish was so bad that suddenly I found the fries with normal ketchup at McDonalds to be extremely appealing.
The Lobster Bisque with Grappa ($42) didn’t fare any better. The presentation of the soup was quite alluring with a whole crayfish as topping. Unfortunately the thickened “film” layered on the surface caused by insufficient heat betrayed the appearance. The soup was again lukewarm upon arrival, and the flavor was absolutely appalling. It’s not lobster based for sure, but more of a tomato-based soup flavored with some low quality shrimp tomalley which resulted in a bitter aftertaste. Opening a good store-bought can of lobster bisque would have yielded a tastier lobster bisque, and Habitu managed to surpass canned soups at the inferior end of the spectrum. The crayfish was merely for garnish as the meat was stringy, mushy, and fishy. I have had many lobster bisques before and this got to be the worst I ever had.
I understand that chains like this don’t normally hire real cooks but rather have their staff heating up prepared items for serving. But if a restaurant were to source products worse than supermarket varieties and not even heat them up properly, that’s just the low point of any culinary establishments.
