On-Yasai is a chain restaurant from Japan and they opened their first shop in Tsim Sha Tsui and most recently in Causeway Bay. Boyfriend and I decided to try this place for lunch as it was new and close to where I live. As it just opened, people were passing out flyers for a free upgrade to another soup base.
Lunch sets come in individual sets that include the type of meat you want, vegetables, potato salad, rice or udon, minced chicken meat, dessert and a drink (Coke, etc). There are upgrade offers such as upgrading to another soup base, dessert or juice. Prices range from $78 o $238, dependent on the meat chosen. They even have a vegetarian only option. Menu is in English, Chinese and Japanese.
Layout is actually quite nice. Each table has it's own secluded space so you get a bit more privacy. The tables are set up with an individual hotplate. There is a bowl with a strainer and that is what you use to place your cooked food on so the soup will drain to the bottom. There are two chopsticks (one for raw food, one for cooked) and I felt that was very hygenic. Two dipping sauces were offered. One was sesame. The other was ponzu soysauce. But they only gave me one bowl for pouring the dipping sauce in. If you need any sort of assistance, you press this touch screen for help. They are pretty responsive and came fairly quickly. Boyfriend and I ordered two different sets to try the different meat available. He used the coupon to upgrade his soup for free. I just want to say ... food is slow here. I don't know why we waited almost 20 minutes for raw food.
I stuck with the lunch set soup. This was a seaweed stock soup. The seaweed were in fine thin noodle form. Boyfriend upgraded to the soymilk soup base. Originally soup upgrades are $10 but as we grabbed a flyer downstairs, this was upgrade was free. This is a worthwhile soup to upgrade to because it was actually soymilk. As it bubbled away, a thin beancurd skin started to form and you can eat it. I found that every time I ordered this soup base in Hong Kong, it was always some watered down white water and not really soymilk at all. This was great. A worthwhile upgrade. Sets included udon or rice. I chose udon. It also came with some vegetables that included bokchoy, carrots, lettuce, onion and shimeji mushrooms. Vegetables were clean and fresh. Not one looked limp. The set also included a potato salad with mentaiko and butter sauce. It was warm upon arrival and just tasted buttery. It was pretty good with everything covered in melted butter. Set included a minced chicken meat stick. This was pretty good. The chicken meat was tender and it was mixed with some soft bone for crunch. Set F included Australian M9 wagyu chuck roll and Danish chicken thigh ($148). I thought it was pretty good of them to label the meat as sometimes we don't know what is what. But then we just cook it anyways and don't really care. Set C included US karabu chuck short rib and Danish Crown pork belly ($98). The quality of the meat was pretty good. Even for the low grade beef so if you really don't want to spend so much, I'd suggest going with the low grade beef as it was just as good. Maybe even better.
Set dessert was ice cream and you can choose between vanilla, strawberry, green tea and red bean. I chose green tea which was fairly good. Not a strong matcha taste but good enough. Ice cream was smooth and creamy. What more can one ask for? For lunch, you can upgrade to another dessert for $8. We upgraded boyfriend's dessert to chocolate brownie as the original almond tofu was not available. This was seriously good. The brownie was actually more like fudge than an actual brownie but still very chocolatey. There was some sweetened whip cream. Decent quality that is perfect for one. We did find out that it is owned by Mou Mou Club, an all you can eat shabu shabu. Boyfriend commented that for this price, he could have all you can eat. I overheard the next table say the same thing. But as I usually don't want all you can eat when I'm by myself, this is a pretty good place for me, so I'll be back.
