有些店平日經過無數次，明明想試都無法成事，The coffee academics 絕對是其中一間。第一次注意到此店，是因為某次到福臨門用餐，飯後經過店外的落地玻璃窗檯，看見擺放了兩個小木箱、一些日式軟墊和牛仔布咕臣，這個小小的空間無論作為等位區，還是吸煙區都很雅緻。心想下雨天坐在門前喝一杯熱咖啡，或許是件很浪漫的事情。也許是天雨關係，今日店內的客人特別少，不復平日熱鬧。店內位置設計呈T 字形，右手邊擺有一張長長的大木桌，配上圓形的高腳椅，有客人戴着耳機，邊聽音樂邊看書，氣氛很像圖書館。左手邊有兩列吧檯，一排靠水吧，一排靠窗，後者可以看街、看人、看名車，有時看路人的同時路人也在看你，挺有趣的。晚飯後的週末總想吃甜品，我們選了有店方推介的鐵板朱古力布朗尼配香草雪糕。令人回味的Brownie總是外脆內sticky，TCA這個更多了一份玩味。由於鐵板相當熱，Browine的底部已經烘得乾脆帶焦香，面頭的雪糕卻意外沒有很快溶掉。店員在我們面前把朱古力醬倒入，落在鐵板的醬汁一下就蒸乾，洗餐具的可頭痛死了。喜歡這個Brownie的甜度和質感，配香草味雪糕雖然無驚喜，但卻無可否認是絕配。不過大家千萬不要像四月一樣笨，把刀叉擱在鐵板邊，很傳熱的結果是差點燙手痛死。很喜歡店內柔和的燈光，黃色灑落在客人身上，感覺很神聖、很有家的感覺。店內的牆身用紅磚砌成，這種紅磚牆，帶點異國風情，令人想起中學時代女同學之間映沙龍照的習慣。那時候未有饒宗頤文化館，女生們都喜歡選香港大學和古物古蹟辦事處作為拍攝地點。那時我們校花的照片，甚至像Yes! I came here with friends for a mid-afternoon tea break. We shared cinnamon sugar churros with hot fusge sauce and espresso ice cream- they were sugary, warm, crunchy, and had lots of the fudgy sauce on they which was sweet and hot! The espresso ice cream was soft, creamy, and cold, which went really well with the churros. My velvet drinking chocolate was great (especially because of the cute design it had- really helps to make it feel more homely and welcoming) and was rich, chocolately, and you could tell that it wasn't just hot chocolate powder with water (yuck) like many other restaurant serve, and I can safely say that it was one fo the best hot chocolate's that I've ever had in hong kong! The design and decor of the restaurant was lovely because it had little fairy lights, loads of seating, and felt comfortable and homely. 今日同朋友係附近做完野，肚餓想食下午茶，本來想去食茶餐廳，不過經過見到coffee academics朋友話想飲佢地咖啡就衝左入去，又咁好彩星期六下午都有位，雖然三個人坐兩人枱有d迫，但係勝在最入面ge枱環境唔糟而且好cozy，所以我地三個女仔坐落都ok。出面我地走個時發現音樂比較大聲，傾計比較難。其實之前自己去過幾次銅鑼灣分店，記得佢d cake無咩特別，所以今次試左其他小食。3個人食左$400幾，老實講，值唔值呢個價就見仁見智，不過我地都係搵個地方食野同傾計，起碼坐左2個鐘service同地方都唔錯，會唔會再來就睇下次經過使唔使等位啦（一定唔會特登來）。…Read More

I usually go out for lunch after 1:30pm to avoid the crowds. By the time I got there, most of the crowd were finishing their coffees and ready to go back to office. I ordered the "Academics Breakfast", expecting the usual sausages, bacon, eggs, baked beans and toasts. The dish arrived quickly but I was immediately disappointed. The plate was full but half of it were barely dressed salad leaves, together with two pieces of bacon, baked beans, one sausage, toasted french bread and wait, ONE egg! Seriously, for HKD108 (plus 10% service charge), I would expect a decent portion. Is two eggs for breakfast too much to ask for?Taste-wise, nothing out of the ordinary. The sausage, bacon, egg and baked beans tasted all right. The salad could use some more seasoning/dressing. I could only taste the olive oil... The bread was way too hard - not crispy. The pesto sauce on top was too little, rendering the rest of the bread just too dry. After I finished the meal (which was quick enough given the measly portion), I ordered a flat white. 15 minutes went by and no sign of it. As far as I saw, the place was half empty and I honestly didn't know it could take that long to make a cup of coffee. Mind you, I was there just two weeks ago on a busy Saturday afternoon and it just took a few minutes to get my coffee. The poor guy next to me ordered a pizza when I had just started eating and he must have waited 20 minutes or more for his food. With the coffee, the bill came to HKD162.8 (including the 10% service charge). Seriously, for this price, I could've got a very decent meal elsewhere and wouldn't have been late for work. P.S. While I'm not a fan of the often mediocre coffee and dubious "food items" to be had in our countless coffee shops that seem to be popping up like mushrooms everywhere, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with this outlet.True, the staff seemed a little inexperienced and didn't help us find a table nor did they tell us if they would serve us or if we'd have to order from the counter (these things are not "self-understood" these days... or maybe I'm just a bit old-fashioned). Anyway, we found the perfect seat with a splendid view of Johnston Road and ordered capuccinos and some "Churro" (a curious South American delight I've been dying to try for ages...). I must say that the wait for our order was a bit long and I think others who came in after we did were served before us, but I suppose it was to ensure that we'd have our coffee with the "Churro", which obviously was made freshly and took a while.Oh, and it was SO worth the wait!!!The "Churro" was hot and crispy crunchy, coated in a delicious combination of cinnamon and sugar and accompanied by a very good coffee ice cream doused in a little caramel sauce. Great coffee, good food, ghastly 'service'...Despite the location, decor, patrons, quality of the menu items and price point. There wont be a return visit purely based on principle; they just don't 'get' service and when I flagged my observations with them, the staff member's answer was "we are busy", not "sorry" or "we'll try to be better next time"..."Busy" is a 'good problem' for your shop to have, and "busy" may mean that we, your customers, may have to wait a little longer for the delivery of our requested items - not a biggy (big problem) if we can see your shop is busy. But "busy" is not an excuse for you and other staff not wait tables or ask or acknowledge folks standing at your service counter for two minutes if they need assistance...I previously had to assist this staff member, my 'WAITress', to 'serve' their customer, so she knew exactly my point - but, along with her colleagues, is overwhelmed with a good morning's trade; when 'eye's up and around the room' (instead of towards the floor or tunnel vision) and 'better time management' is imperative...Only once escorted to my seat and left with the menus did this staff member take the order of the guy neighbouring me that had been seated prior to my arrival. It was difficult to get her attention as she rush away, walking straight past my table, to give her my coffee order.Coffee came quick (and it is gooood FWIW), but as I was on the phone at that time neither one of us attempted to obtain/give a food order - no problem. She came back a few times to seat new guests, but her peripheral vision was non apparent (an never checked in on her existing seated customers). 10 minutes later seating new guests right next to my table, I literally had to lunge at her to get her attention to place my breakfast order.Well-trained staff should know their section and where their tables are at (in the ordering/delivery process). Being 'busy' with customers coming and going will challenge one's memory, but this is where a good set of eyes will help; i.e. menus still sitting on the tables would suggest that they're (still) yet to order...Some 10 mins after finishing my food (and coffee), I wasn't able to flag any staff to request the check, so not able to identify where the cashier area is, I stood at their service area.One member of staff at the bar worked (sorting orders and saucering drinks) standing next to me for most of the two minutes I stood there, her and my 'WAITress' both walked pass and around me at lease once each during that time - I didn't say anything, as this had now become a test to determine just how bad it is. No eye contact, no 'can I help you' or 'what the hell are you doing standing here in our way...'.I could have quite easily walked out without paying, and not been challenged - did others...Finally, I spoke to both of them, requesting for the bill and that an acknowledgement that I was standing there would have been nice...Busy? Then work smarter, when you seat new customers on your way back to your service area or awaiting task simply look around your section and perhaps even check in on some customers that you haven't checked in on for a while... This was the suggestion I made to my 'WAITress' when she told me 'we are busy' as she prepared my bill, and she then replied with 'we are busy' clearly missing the point...If the staff / mgmt of TCA read this, fortunately there is a variety of places for us to explore around HKI for a Sunday morning coffee and breakfast, so if you want to retain your other customers please take heed the observations herein; not only as described above, but I also observed that perhaps your wait staff are working too large section (for the turnover of people) or always meddling a section that is not their own.I also noted that a number of customers seated in the area I was in, didn't stick around very long, short seating and only drinks... Perhaps its their own schedule, or we're they also disappointed with the level of service...?With the rental prices in HKG, I'm sure that not only do you want your business to be 'busy' but also to successfully sustain being 'busy'... if so, then you need to spend time with your staff, and help them - and also train the bar staff that they can help out when the wait staff are struggling (i.e. they shouldn't be above asking a customer standing next to them for two minutes if they need assistance). The bar staff had to 'push the app button' to print the bill for the wait staff to retrieve and then deliver to the customer - efficient...?Good luck, I wont be back and I only introduce my friends to places where they're likely to enjoy the experience, but I'll swing by to see what your shop front looks like in 6-9 mths from now... that's the exciting, yet sad, reality of HKG; new dining experiences to try within a year of when the last tenant launched and couldn't sustain...…Read More

I met up for breakfast with buddy M today after she got off work. I have gone to the Causeway Bay location before, but not this. Servicekay. Environment & Hygiene:Cement, brick and wood is my style, so thumbs up!  Hygiene was okay. Taste & Value:There were somewhere between 5 to 10 items to choose from, and all come with coffee/tea. M's: Academics Breakfast You have got to love the presentation of this dish!  I tried a bit of everything, and everything tasted decent. The sausage was packed with herbs and the length of it was ridiculously long. Mine: Eggs Benedict The 2 eggs were placed on 1 side of the muffin because instead of the salad being on the side, it was on the other half of the English muffin. How smart of them, so they saved themselves a piece of ham. I felt cheated. Oh well, I do have to admit that this benedict was indeed very tasty.  I think it was broiled and I liked it. The hollandaise sauce was balanced and very tasty, so I forgive them for robbing me my piece of ham. Cappuccino (+$20) M had a plain lemon tea, and I needed my coffee fix. I've been here many times for coffee, which is REALLY expensive, but is quite good.  If you're willing to pay about double than what you would at Pacific Coffee for a small cup of coffee, then maybe you'll like it too lol.  The spot itself is very cute and nicely decorated with big windows in front, but they also cram like twice as many seats as there should be in there.  It's soooooo busy on a weekend afternoon!I've dined in twice.  Both meals left much to be desired.  First was the breakfast tower.  It is a hefty portion of breakfast offerings stacked up, as the name suggests, in a tower.  A piece of toast serves as the base with spring mix drizzled with vinagrette, slices of tomato, bacon, a sausage, and an egg over easy.  Sounds good, right?  In theory, yes, but it was impossible to eat!!  I just deconstructed it so I had a messy plate of breakfast items that I could actually eat.  I have no idea how they think someone is supposed to eat food stacked like that.  My guess is they didn't, and they just wanted to be cute and do it for sake of presentation.  It was okay, but extremely expensive at over 100 dollars for what it was...  toast, an egg, bacon, and sausage.  Would not order again.I went there today and had THE WORST FISH TACOS I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE.  They were literally fishsticks in hard taco shells with "mango salsa" on them, which is just diced mango and onion as far as I could tell.  They were TERRIBLE.  the "fish" was cold, and the taco shells were straight up STALE.  Like completely inedible as they were chewy they were so stale!  The "salsa" was REALLY sweet as it was mostly mango and little else.  It was actually quite funny what a complete and total fail this meal was.  And the price, dear god...  the tacos and an iced tea came to $198.  You've GOT to be kidding me.  I think I could make better fish tacos myself.  drunk.  with one arm.As for the iced tea, it's a pretty small glass and cost $42, but I have to say it was DELICIOUS.  I will give credit where credit is due.  In my experience it has been hard to find unsweetened iced tea in Hong Kong so I was DELIGHTED to find it here.  Just a HINT of citrus and so, so refreshing.  I will be ordering this for take-away on a hot day (read: every day lol) many times this summer!But... 銅鑼灣 The Coffee Academics 經常去. 但灣仔店是第一次由第一天開已期望到直至這一個星期日方有緣份光顧約了朋友三時見面, 但過了半小時還沒有見她出現小妹唯有先下單唔想以為我明坐, 白用她們 WifiCappuccino是指定動作 6 oz $38 再加一點甜品便完美下午茶了從走進店子那一刻已被在餅櫃內的Lemon Tart $42 吸引著,小妹今天絕不放過它它的體積就正如一般的蛋撻一樣, 身材中等,但以 $42 來說絕不便宜了。蛋白糖打得很輕, 更以火槍燒過, 能夠輕微增加脆之餘, 亦令賣相加分。蛋白糖面下是一層液體形狀的檸檬汁, 感覺是有點奇怪, 但甜酸味道讓人感覺。清新, 撻皮則有欠鬆化, 這個非一般的Lemon Tart好不容易會令人留下印象。Cappuccino (Slimmed Milk) 奶泡豐富, 細滑如白雲,咖啡濃度就像度身訂造一樣, 不酸, 不苦, 不過濃, 而且餘韻更停留在口腔一會。無論環境, 食物, 咖啡也令人滿意, 只是價錢略貴。雖然喜歡這裡但亦只會偶以光顧, 反正好得咖啡店多的是。…Read More
