Hong kong's thai restaurants are mainly serving Bangkok style cuisines nowadays. Chachawan becomes imminently a pioneer in serving Northeastern thai cuisine. The restaurant is in urban setting with friendly vibes. The dining place upstairs was beautifully decorated. Larp Moo was a good choice for appetiser - the chopped pork mince tasted fine with the lettuce and spicy sour dressing. However, I couldn't find the pork skin they listed out in the menu.

The mains were incredibly savoury. Gai Yung (I hope I get the name right) are chicken thighs marinated for many hours with garlic and pepper. The juicy meat, served attaching to a bamboo stick, was very fulfilling. The pork collar was perfected grilled as well and the fragrance of coriander and shallot definitely made everyone mouth-watered. Their secretly homemade sauce (jhim jeaw),which i have no idea what it is made of, was incredible as well.

Love that fried rice with eggs, onions and CRAB MEAT, except the side sauce could be less salty.

Ended the dinner with their free dessert: green mango with red and green chili sugar. They were so surprisingly matched and I could not afford the mango with glutinous rice, which I originally wanted to order, anymore.

平時泰國菜吃不少,主要常吃到的都是冬陰功湯炸魚或者咖哩,前幾天和好友去了在上環的Chachawan吃依善泰菜,感覺有點不一樣!這家泰國餐廳坐落於荷里活道上,不是很大但是很多外國人來吃,裝潢也走的是舒適時尚的風格,就是那種直接可以穿舒服衣服下樓吃個飯的舒適感哈哈。依善(Isaan)這地方在泰國的東北部,比鄰老窩和柬埔寨,菜時味道比其他泰國地區要辣,反差比較大。這邊的菜都是即叫即煮,但上菜速度也蠻快的。我們點了幾樣菜share,第一個是Khao Pad($148). 當我以為這只是個普通的炒飯用來填填肚子,我錯了哈哈哈!這家的是用蟹肉和雞蛋洋蔥炒出來的,食材很普通,但是是我吃過最好吃的炒飯!很有鍋氣,不油膩,飯粒粒粒分明,味道剛剛好不會咸不辣。旁邊還配有一小碗秘制醬汁,是很稀的那種汁,味道有點酸酸的,放點在飯裡面一起吃味道很特別!下一道菜是Goong Golae($198). 這是烤虎蝦,有兩大隻,份量不多。大蝦非常新鮮爽口,上面放了一點點乾紅咖哩連皮一起烤,,蝦肉鮮甜,好好吃!依善這地區擅長烤肉,我們點了Khor Moo Yung($158), 就是烤豬頸肉。我平常很少吃豬頸肉因為母親大

下一道菜是Goong Golae($198). 這是烤虎蝦,有兩大隻,份量不多。大蝦非常新鮮爽口,上面放了一點點乾紅咖哩連皮一起烤,,蝦肉鮮甜,好好吃!

依善這地區擅長烤肉,我們點了Khor Moo Yung($158), 就是烤豬頸肉。我平常很少吃豬頸肉因為母親大人常說打針都在豬頸上打,所以不要吃太多。很久沒吃,這家餐廳做得讓我覺得破戒一次還是值得的(笑)。這一碟有很多塊豬頸肉,堆得像坐山那麼高。肉質非常爽口,不肥不瘦,配上醬汁超好吃!

最後這個甜品我非常不建議點,就是mango sticky rice($75). 芒果還蠻清甜的,但上面那個椰奶醬實在太甜了,甜得我雞皮疙瘩都起來,連我這個愛吃甜食的人都受不了!而且糯米飯煮得不夠熟,還吃到有硬硬的米粒,這道甜品是這家餐廳的一個敗筆呀。

復活假開始了, 下班後和朋友到chachawan食美食, 喝一杯, 聊聊天. 這間店即使沒有訂座, 但仍然很受歡迎, 座無虛席. 和友人約6點45分到達, 幸好人未算多, 可以即時安排入座. 這裡裝修/設計很特別, 不論牆面設計, 枱櫈, 餐牌或是器皿都有香港五/六十年代的感覺, 但其實是食泰國菜. 哈哈! 牆上的畫作也很漂亮, 更有幾條紅線構成圖案, 非常特別.  Waitress推薦了兩款飲品給我們, 所以友人點了Mango Chia, 我則點了Coconut and Kaffir Lime Leaf Martini.Coconut and Kaffir Lime Leaf Martini入口是咸咸的味道, 像炒菜/香芧的味道, 感覺怪怪的 , 然後會嚐到青檸葉的味道, 但就幾乎沒有椰子味道 , 有點失望呢. 不過再多喝幾口的話, 習慣了這種咸咸的味道反而有種愈喝愈想喝的感覺, 配著酸辣的沙律, 挺不錯的. 試了口友人的Mando Chia, 淡淡的芒果味, 清甜甘香. 這個好像更好喝. 因為晚點約了其他人食飯, 所以只叫了沙律和筷子雞過過口癮.柚子木瓜沙律酸酸甜

Coconut and Kaffir Lime Leaf Martini入口是咸咸的味道, 像炒菜/香芧的味道, 感覺怪怪的
, 然後會嚐到青檸葉的味道, 但就幾乎沒有椰子味道
, 有點失望呢. 不過再多喝幾口的話, 習慣了這種咸咸的味道反而有種愈喝愈想喝的感覺, 配著酸辣的沙律, 挺不錯的.

試了口友人的Mando Chia, 淡淡的芒果味, 清甜甘香. 這個好像更好喝.

因為晚點約了其他人食飯, 所以只叫了沙律和筷子雞過過口癮.

柚子木瓜沙律酸酸甜甜, 挺開胃, 不過不失, 也不太特別. 反而筷子雞則有驚喜
. 筷子雞是用類似筷子的木夾夾著無骨雞脾肉烤. 烤過的雞皮有金黃色澤, 微焦中滲著陣陣香氣
, 令人食指大動. 雖然是雪藏雞肉, 但雞肉卻嫩滑多汁, 而且夠彈牙
. 配著秘製醬汁食, 消油解膩, 又是另一番滋味.


店員最後會送上青木瓜甜品, 伴青檸味和辣味的糖. 先試青檸味, 味道清新, 帶點淡淡的甜味! 辣味真的頗辣, 而且辣味是那種慢慢滲出來的感覺, 挺得意.
即使怕辣的也可以沾點試試哦~ 不過我還是較喜歡清新的青檸味. 這個甜品加分不少哦~

本來諗住去皇后街熟食中心食飯,點知佢關閉維修至4月2日唯有搵過第二啲嘢食~用open rice 「附近餐廳」功能搵到呢間泰菜館!我哋第一次食東北泰菜,本來都諗住係啲符合外國人口味嘅泰菜(因為主要係外國人食客居多!)坐低睇食乜時已有驚喜!由於坐喺open kitchen 前嘅吧枱(只係逼咗啲!),煮咩點煮一目了然!我哋唔知每碟份量有幾多,所以先叫咗一個沙律同烤雞先~個脆豬沙律,好有驚喜!個燒肉好脆,夠咸香,叫少辣都好夠!因為東北泰菜比普通泰菜辣!之後嚟個蒜香雞,啲炸蒜超多~整到好似日本嘅木魚絲咁!雖然我唔蒜但都覺得好好味食完後未飽,又見廚師炒嘅炒飯好吸引,叫咗個蟹肉炒飯嚟食!呢個蟹肉炒飯,好乾身,因為真係用冷飯炒(open kitchen我哋睇住),本身個飯好淡味,但配埋佢附上嘅辣椒魚露就一絕正!本來想食個芒果糯米飯作結!但因為已七成飽同男朋友唔比食芒果,唯有叫個crispy banana pancake! 又係出奇地好味初時都驚會太甜,點知唔係!啲味好夾

Yes!  I was attracted to Chachawan by this coconut ice cream!I used to travel to Malaysia often for work, and there was this coconut ice cream place that I go every single time when I am in town.And here I am, a good reason to start my ever first review after having the openrice account for years....  Chachawan is a little chic restaurant, you will love it if you are a spicy food lover ... Yes!  I was attracted to Chachawan by this coconut ice cream!

I used to travel to Malaysia often for work, and there was this coconut ice cream place that I go every single time when I am in town.

And here I am, a good reason to start my ever first review after having the openrice account for years....

I have not seen a review of this place lately so I thought I’d submit a short update/confirmation.I popped in this place with a buddy and really surprised by the authentic Thai food. I have not seen a review of this place lately so I thought I’d submit a short update/confirmation.

I popped in this place with a buddy and really surprised by the authentic Thai food. I lived in Thailand for 2 years, including Chiang Mai and this food brought me back.

The food is bold and full of flavor/spice, just like it should be.

The Gai Yun (Chargrilled Chicken thigh) was as good, or even better, than the grilled street food that I used to get in Chiang Mai. BTW, the street food is often the best you can get in Thailand so comparing it to street food is a HUGE compliment.

Somtum Malakor (Green papaya salad) was always a favorite of mine and this had the bold sour and vinegar flavors, and spice, that I have not found elsewhere in HK.

The curry shrimp (forgot the Thai name) are huge succulent shrimp with a wonderful curry caked on then the grilled. To die for.

I have had 10 different dishes on my 4 trips there and never had one that I was not impressed by.

If you like coffee, try the alcoholic Thai Coffee shake. If you ever had the Tigers Milk in Thailand, it’s a close cousin.
Someone previously posted that it’s loud and full of hipsters. I’m no hipster ( I remember when Thailand was called Siam) and I HATE places that sound like a disco on Saturday night but I had no issue with the music volume or acoustics of the room except once. We had been seated right in front of a speaker so I asked them to turn down that one speaker, which they did promptly.
This place looks like a seedy little dive bar but the food is great.  If you need to wait, they have an agreement with the place next door where you can wait at the bar until your table is ready.

One complaint: They don't offer take out. I had to order 1 extra dish, take a bite and then say "I'm full. Wrap this to go." Kind of silly as there are many times I want thier food but don't want to sit in a restaurant. I wish they would chage that rule, at least for me.

After all, this is Hong Kong and life is too short to eat bad food.

簡單來說是泰式生菜包,內容有豬肉碎,豬耳,豬皮等等。一上枱已經被那幾片生菜吸引著,很青很新鮮的顏色哦!!
本人平時叫生菜包很少真的會夾菜來吃,但這個Larp Moo是我吃過最好吃的一個生菜包!!生菜非常非常新鮮爽甜!加上加了Spicy Sour Dressing既肉碎是一個完美配搭!!十分之好吃!!

餐後送上泰國芒果片伴Lemon Grass and Chilli Sugar,第一次吃這種爽口的泰國芒果,基本上沒什麼味道,只有少許青澀味,但加上Lemon Grass 同Chilli Sugar卻出奇地好吃!

Chachawan的定價在泰國菜中絕對是高位,但驚喜度十足!用料亦十分新鮮!絕對值得來試試!!

每個菜都好惹味,生菜包的炒粒粒是激辛的,怕辣的朋友淺嘗也罷;而椰蓉湯丸是咸甜與共的,湯丸激甜椰汁頗咸,各人口味不同,依然值得一試

If seeing a bunch of hipsters dressed like Pharrell is your thing then this is the place for you. Get ready to shell out 140-170 hkd per tapas sized dish, leaving you a great taste..hungry for more. The problem for me wasn't the food, it was the pricing and portion size. The crowd that the finds it acceptable to pay such prices for what they were getting should be robbed of their bank accounts. Nothing is cool about shelling out top dollar for down to earth Northern Thai cuisine.

Ultimately I can't knock the owners for being able to juice these hipster's wallets...in fact I think it's genius. It's just a shame that Lenny Kravitz over there is letting them get away with it.

3 tapas sized dishes and 3 non-alcoholic beverages ended up being 650 hkd...they had the audacity to write 'no service charge!!' on the bill as if to make me feel better about spending 650 hkd on some snacks.
Steer clear of this place, plenty of places to get drinks and authentic thai eats in hk where you'll be happy and safe from robbery....unless you are a hipster, keep opening up your wallets to these places trying to re-invent really good down to earth food so you can feel good about yourself.  #inthescene #blessed #paymore #brokebutcool

I really rate this place. The decor, the atmosphere - lively, but not ridiculously crowded, and the food of course - are all top notch.

The food is quite spicy, though you can ask them to make dishes 'white guy spicy' (:-D!) and they'll try and tone it down a bit. Personally I love spicy food, but some friends of mine have had upset tummies because of the level of spice.

Stand out dishes: Khao Pad. It's just rice, right? It's delicious - large chunks of crab meat, with an excellent flavour. And it comes with that delicious thai-style vinegar with fresh chillies in it (Nampla Prik, or Prik Dong?).

We tried the Pla Phao Glua (salt encrusted whole seabass) last night, and it was good. It it's pretty huge, so I'd only order again with a large group. The fish was succulent and had a delicate flavour.

The Gai Yung is another favourite of mine. The sauce is delicious - sweet, vinegary and a little spicy. The chicken thigh is juicy, with crispy skin and a smoky, grilled taste.

Finally, the mango sticky rice is a must-try. The rice is coconutty and not overly-sweet, with a slightly salty taste. A simply but perfectly balanced dish. Unfortunately (and unsurprisingly) they had sold out of this last night.
For drinks, the pomegranate and pomelo cooler is also really good - refreshing and not at all syrupy - perfect to cool down those spicy dishes.

Additionally, the service last night was great. They made an effort to seat us as quickly as possible, even though there was a private party upstairs.
One issue I have - last time, we tried to order an a dessert to take home with our leftovers, and the waitress wouldn't allow us to, because they don't do take-out. Considering we'd eaten in, I think a bit of flexibility should've been given in this instance.

Still, great place overall - the closest thing to genuine Northern Thai food that I've come across in HK.

I still can't believe I haven't tried out one of the hippest eateries on the block. Chachawan has been garnering quite a buzz since its opening last year. There's always a queue when I make my through Hollywood Road. And finally I got to try it. Remember, no reservations. Only walk ins, and full party must be there to be seated. I had a quick cocktail once before- but haven't had dinner there yet. Gai Yung | Chicken Thigh marinated for 24 hours in garlic, pepper, coriander, grilled till crispy, served with jhim jeaw | $158 | The chicken was quite yummy too, it was packed with flavor...but for the price and portion you get...I would say skip this...but if you do end up ordering it, save the yummy citrus-y and spicy sauce! Khao Pad | Wok of fried rice of crab meat, egg and spring onions | $128 | I'm normally not a fan rice at restaurants..you can make it yourself at home, they might get it too dry, etc...but this dish was terrific!! I LOVED it. I loved the hearty, juicy and plump crab meat...I got a lot of crab meat in every bite and the rice was moist, tasty and flavourful. Which I really liked. Adding the sauce from the chicken made this fried rice even better.

Pla Phao Glua |Salt encrusted whole seabass stuffed w/ lemongrass, pandanas, and lime leaf, cooked over fire, with a chili dipping sauce | $268 | It'll take about 25 minutes.... the fish was recommended to us as a specialty dish at Chachawan...how can you pass that up!? And lo and behold, the presentation was pretty cool. Piping hot, a nice show piece, large and the fish meat was quite juicy. Not too bad!

Overall, I really enjoyed myself. It was a fun night of good banter, chacha smashes and fun thai food!
Prices are pretty reasonable...much more reasonable than most places in Sheung Wan and Central!

We had the extremely spicy green papaya salad (perhaps TOO spicy), something fried egg salad, Gai yung (HKD158), and Pla Phao Glue (HKD268). 

Absolutely loving the Gai Yung which was the marinated chicken thigh so tender and juicy, comes with the very delicious sour dipping sauce that I want to have more.

Pla Phao Glue also came in as a positive surprise - it was a salted crusted whole seabass served with a chilli dipping sauce. The seabass was stuffed with lemon grass and thai basil etc, which had this aromatic smells to it. This dish was huge which, was not expected at all (personally I think its worth the price).

We also ordered to fried egg sour/spicy salad (forgot the name unfortunately, but see pic below) and it was so special (there was something like chinese sausage mixed together, strange but strangely good!) and yummy I am already thinking when I should go back and eat again.

Read some of the reviews that sticky rice (Khao Niew $28) was not as good as the jasmine rice ($25) so I opted for normal jasmine rice - BUT i was WRONG. I had some of my friend's sticky rice and it was great and better than normal rice. Next time - Sticky rice it is.

We were all stuffed towards the end of the dinner there was no more room for our favourite mango sticky rice.

All in all, I like this restaurant a lot (i cannot believe I only went there after opening for a year) - perhaps the only downside was the seasoning/sauce mostly has quite a bit of fish sauce/saltiness in it and we were all quite thirsty after the meal. But then its definitely one of the Thai restaurants that I'd want to go back again and again.
題外話/補充資料: We had to sit on the bar seats as those were the earliest available we can get; it was OKAY, but if you want to share dishes it can get quite messy sometimes (we had 3 ppl and that's the maximum number you should have if you want to take the bar seats..otherwise, wait for proper table)

The volumn of music was more appropriate for a night club rather than a restaurant. In general, I don't enjoy shouting at people and being shouted at in order to have a conversation.

Then the bill came and it was a little surprising. I heard it was pricey, but I didn't expect that two people with two drinks (beet + cider) and a few dishes at a Thai restaurant would be presented with a $600 bill (excluding service...!)
